BONITA CANYON SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL MINUTES March 16, 2010 MEETING

I. Call to Order A. The meeting was called to order at 9:30 am by Susan Dahlin. B. Members present: Dr. Robin Beacham, Susan Dahlin, Marlene Dane, Christian Hinkle, Patty Gray, Tina Hudson, Clyde Dodge, Monique Nunamaker, Sholeh Dominick, Po Fu, Sejal Nathwani. Guest: Meredith Stenta.

II. Approved the Minutes from February 16, 2010 Meeting.

III. SLIP Budget Dr. Beacham reported that the budget remains frozen as of January 11, 2010. Most items need to be approved by IUSD. It is anticipated that the level of funding for personnel (ie substitutes and instructional assistants) which cannot be frozen, may remain the same next year. What will happen to the frozen funds remains to be seen.

IV. Old Business Reviewed final SPSA.

V. New Business A. Visitation Discussion/Technology 1. Pursley (2nd) –use of airliner for language arts/vocabulary 2. Hunsicker (K)- Maxwrite, Orchard Math, RandMcNally Maps 3. Dent (3rd)-“First in Math” pilot program. Used in computer lab and at home for minimal cost/student (optional parent contribution). Used for all math curriculum from intervention all the way to Pre-algebra. Sticker reward system for students and online progress access for parents. 4. Ngo (6th)- Use of standard overhead projector for discussing upcoming writing of autobiography. Discussed various genre. B. RTI (Response to Instruction) Program to be implemented at BC. Training to begin 5/20, 5/22. The program will differentiate instruction based upon student reading levels and is standards based.

C. Final Meeting plan 1 It was agreed that the final meeting will be held June 1 and will include a post-Open House walk through and a potpourri of visitations.

All parents interested in serving on the SSC for the 2010-2011 school year will be invited to attend the final meeting and an election will be held. Chairperson and Secretary will also be chosen.

VI. Reports A. Principal –Dr. Beacham Dr. Beacham thanked the PTA for its continued support for the school and mentioned the importance of the technological gifts including the document cameras, microphones. A discussion took place with regard to the possibility of putting lap tops in the portables and the necessary wireless application.

Dr. Beacham reminded everyone that one of the best ways to support the school community in these difficult budgetary times is to participate in the IPSF fundraiser, campaign ongoing.

B. PTA – Meredith Stenta (PTA Treasurer) Meredith was pleased to report that the Spring Fundraiser was a great success (over $100,000 raised) this year and particularly due to the wonderful efforts of the Chairperson, Diana Camaur. Also noted was the fact that teachers were some of the contributors to the “FUND AN ITEM” for the novels ($25,000).

C. ADVOCACY- Susan Dahlin IUSD was able to avoid deep cuts to science and music by negotiating furlough days with the teachers unions, and by increasing class sizes. Furlough days will include June 7, 8, 14 and 15 for the current school year. School will begin September 2, 2010 and the teachers will not be afforded set up days due to further negotiations re: furlough.

Watch for Governor’s May revise and its effect on IUSD budgeting.

VII. Adjournment- the meeting was adjourned by Susan Dahlin at 11:30pm.
