Prospective Puppy Owner Questionnaire

Thank you for your interest in our Finnish Lapphunds. We carefully plan our breedings, which do not exceed twice a year. Each prospective breeding dog and bitch has been carefully selected. We adhere to the Finnish Lapphund Club of America’s Code of Ethics, and all breeding stock are OFA, or Penn-Hip or OFA pre-lim’d for hips, elbows and patellas. Eyes are PRA tested via Optigen blood test, except those dogs that were automatically declared PRA Clear due to both parents being Optigen cleared, and CERF’d. We also perform a full panel thyroid test. All of the above tests are vital to preserving the breed and producing the healthiest possible Finnish Lapphund puppy.

To us at Yutori Finnish Lapphunds, a sound mind is as important as a sound dog. Our breeding dogs are also carefully screened for mental soundness.

All our puppies are raised in our home. They are socialized and part of our family. We plan to be a part of their life forever.

We would like for you, the prospective puppy owner to take a few minutes to answer our questions and to tell us a little about yourselves. This will help us to evaluate your qualifications to own a Finnish Lapphund and to better match you with a puppy. As the breeders we reserve the right to suggest a specific puppy for you based upon the information we learn from you. Show picks are offered to experienced show breeders with a proven record first, before remaining puppies are offered to companion homes.

THIS QUESTIONNAIRE IS NOT AN AGREEMENT TO SELL YOU A DOG. THESE QUESTIONS WILL HELP US DETERMINE IF YOU MAY BE A QUALIFIED APPLICANT FOR ONE OF OUR PUPPIES. BY SENDING THIS QUESTIONNAIRE TO YOU, WE DO NOT MAKE ANY PROMISES THAT WE WILL OFFER TO SELL YOU A PUPPY. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE THE SALE OF A PUPPY.

Why have you chosen a Finnish Lapphund? What other breed of dogs have you previously owned? Explain that experience.

If you do not presently own a dog, but had one previously, what happened to that dog or dogs?

Have you ever had a pet die from anything other than old age? If so, what were the circumstances?

What other animals currently reside in your home? If you already own a dog, what breed of dog, and is your dog spayed/neutered?

Do you intend to spay or neuter this puppy if you obtain one from us? If not, please explain.

Please describe your/your family's activity level that might include your puppy? (Active outdoor life vs. more of a couch potato).

Please describe your hobbies that might include your puppy/dog. Do you own your own home? If so, how long have you lived at your present address?

Does your house have air-conditioning?

How large is your yard, and is it fenced? If so – what type of fencing do you have? How tall is your fencing?

What experience/knowledge do you have regarding socialization and obedience training?

Have you ever attended obedience class? If so, did you graduate? Would you be willing to attend obedience class with this new puppy?

What discipline do you use or intend to use, to train your puppy? How will you correct it if it does something you consider wrong? (explain in detail)

Name, address and phone number of your Veterinarian. How long have you been a client?

Who in your family would be the primary caregiver of this puppy, and would you and they sign a moral obligation* as stipulated in our contract? Do you have children? If so, how many and what ages?

Would this puppy be in contact with other children other than your own? Are you comfortable supervising those children and controlling how they behave toward your puppy?

Have you ever lost a pet? If so, was it recovered and for how long was it lost?

Are you committed to caring for this Finnish Lapphund for its entire lifetime? Even when it may be 12-16 years?

Have you ever given away a pet to a shelter or another home? If so, why?

What would you do if you decided to move and were going into an apartment or other living arrangements which were not conducive to owning a dog?

Are you familiar with the Finnish Lapphund Standard, and the breed as a whole? Would this dog be kept as an indoor dog, outside in a fenced yard, outside tied up, or in a kennel?

Where would the dog stay during the day while you are working? Also, please briefly describe a typical work day (ex., leave time/return time, etc).

Where will the dog stay when you are home?

Where will the dog sleep at night?

How much daily interaction would there be with people or other pets?

Would you be willing to keep us up to date about this Lappy puppy periodically, in regard to health and temperament? Would you be willing to send photos?

Are you on any other breeder's waiting list? If so, whose?

All information is confidential, and will be used as a screening tool to properly place our beloved puppies. If the breeders finds that any of the above information is false, or misrepresented, any agreements may be considered void.

*Moral obligation as stipulated in our contract simply refers to the proper care (diet, exercise, socialization, veterinary care, and commitment to the dog for its lifetime, from YOU) we expect from our puppy buyers.

Please note:

IF we determine that you are a suitable home for one of our Finnish Lapphunds, we will require a deposit of $200 from you, to reserve a puppy. We will further allow you to stipulate your preference of gender. If we have a puppy that meets your criteria and you decide not to take the puppy, your deposit is forfeited. IF we decide not to sell you a puppy that meets your criteria, or we do not have a puppy for you, your deposit will be returned. SUBMITTING A DEPOSIT, OR OUR REQUEST FOR AND ACCEPTANCE OF YOUR DEPOSIT, IS NOT AN AGREEMENT OR GUARANTEE TO SELL YOU A DOG. IF IN OUR CORRESPONDENCE OR UPON PERSONAL MEETING, WE FIND THAT WE ARE NOT ABLE TO DO SO, OR IF WE FIND THAT WE ARE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH SELLING YOU A DOG, WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO REFUND YOUR DEPOSIT. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT WHERE WE PLACE OUR PUPPIES AND TO REVERSE A DECISION IF INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE THAT WE FEEL MAKES A HOME UNSUITABLE FOR ONE OF OUR DOGS. BY SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION TO US AND IF WE ACCEPT YOUR DEPOSIT, YOU AGREE TO OUR PUPPY PLACEMENT POLICY.
