Objectives/Goals: Students will be able to…  Analyze interactions between characters in literary text and how the interactions affect plot.  Identify and analyze how an author uses figurative language, sound, devices and literary techniques to shape plot, set meaning and develop tone.  Write responses to literature that extend beyond the summary and support references to the text, other works, other authors or to personal knowledge  Use documented textual evidence to justify interpretations of literature or to support a research topic Major assignments due: Of Mice and Men essay, test on poetry and poetry packet Monday, 9/24  Finish watching the Steinbeck biography  Finish outlining  Finish notes on writing an extended response Homework: Finish outlines: write concluding sentence, fix any of the dos and don’ts

Tuesday, 9/25  Formatting an essay  Type essay in the computer lab Homework: Find the lyrics to a school appropriate song or poem that you like: It needs to be printed out, at least double spaced, and centered on the page.

Wedensday, 9/26  Define perfect rhyme, ½ rhyme, end rhyme, internal rhyme, and rhyme scheme  Read and listen to the lyrics for “Thy Hipphophipotomus vs. The Rhymnocerus.” Look for examples of Rhyme and label the Rhyme scheme  Students complete the Rhyme page in their packets  Listen to “Ex-Girlfriends” to see if your answers are right. Homework: Write a 12 line poem, using a rhyme scheme and has at least two internal rhymes Bring in the lyrics to another school appropriate song that you like or poem you love

Thursday, 9/27  Notes on Rhythm and Meter  Complete the Rhythm page in poetry packets  Play board game  Go over the theme page in packet  Discuss how the poetic devices might affect a poem as a whole. Homework: Add a row to the theme page in your packet: Explain the theme in the lyrics you chose.

Friday, 9/28  Model the test for poetry by putting one of my favorite poems on the board.  Students take their poetry test.
