IDENTITY EXERCISE

Name:______Date:______

Everyone has a tendency to be a particular way, either because it is “hard-wired” in our brains or because of our experiences in the past. Just because you have a tendency to be a particular way doesn’t mean that is who you HAVE to be. You can decide to overcome your “tendency” and become the person that you WANT to be. Your choices and behavior patterns, not your history or biology, determine who you ARE. Luckily, those are in YOUR control! Instructions: 1. For each of the characteristics, rate how you see yourself now by making a black X on the scale. 2. After you are done, go back and mark a red X where you would like to be on each of the characteristics. These are your personal goals. 3. Next, develop an action plan by picking the characteristic that you want to work on first and make a list of behaviors that fall under that characteristic. Set daily goals to do one or more of these behaviors every day, if possible. 4. Once you have a successful pattern of behavior for the first characteristic, repeat step 3 for a second characteristic. As you are successful with each one, choose another characteristic to work on. Everyone makes progress at their own pace, so don’t worry about how long it takes you. Just keep striving to be the person that you want to be and you will eventually succeed. 5. If you consistently do these behaviors, eventually you start doing them without thinking about it, and it starts being who you ARE.
