Tips for Designing Slides

 Use font sizes 20 point or larger  Use a larger font (32-54) for the title  Only use bold or underline for emphasis  Be consistent by capitalizing only the first word of all bulleted text  Do not use all caps except for titles  No more than 6 words per line/bullet  No more than 6 bullets per slide  Use dark text on light background or light text on dark background (contrasting colors)  Keep the background and color scheme consistent  Limit the number of colors on a single screen – stay with the same color scheme  Keep the design clean and uncluttered. Leave empty space around the text and graphics  Use only high quality clipart and graphics of the same style (should be used sparingly)  The clipart or graphics should relate to and enhance the topic of the slide  Limit the number of transitions and animations used. It is often better to use only one so the audience knows what to expect  Any sound should enhance the presentation

Tips for Presenting

 Practice using the projection system to check your slides before the day of your presentation  Face the audience and maintain good eye contact  Do not read the presentation (the text should be a cue for the presenter rather than a message for the viewer)  Write your presentation notes with short sentences, action verbs and simple grammar  Be enthusiastic about your subject  Speak clearly and with sufficient volume  If sound effects are used, wait until the sound has finished to speak  Practice, practice, practice  Relax and breathe
