Dear Colleague: August 29, 2005

We’re very pleased to be representing the following films that will screen at the annual feast of quality world cinema known as the Toronto International Film Festival. Two of the films, the insanely timely SORRY,HATERS and the smart teen movie ONE LAST THING … were made here in New York and have important yet wildly different things to say about the way we live right now in our city. ONE LAST THING … stars the terrific young actor Michael Angarano (“Sky High”) as does DEAR WENDY, which opens theatrically Sept. 23, a week or so after Toronto.

LITTLE FISH features Oscar winner Cate Blanchett working in her native Australian idiom, while THANK YOU FOR SMOKING features the perfectly-cast Aaron Eckhart in the debut feature from Jason Reitman, whose last name should raise eyebrows in both Toronto and Hollywood circles.

THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, LITTLE FISH and SORRY,HATERS all go on the market for distribution at Toronto.

We also have the latest film by Steven Soderbergh, BUBBLE, which proves once again that this director is one of our greatest storytellers. Like ONE LAST THING …, BUBBLE will air on the HDNet Movies channel the same day Magnolia Pictures opens the movie theatrically. BUBBLE will go on to play the New York Film Festival and will open in January, 2006. ONE LAST THING … will open in the spring of 2006.

Jeremy Walker + Associates will be staying at Toronto’s Delta Chelsea Hotel, 416-595-1975, but the best way to reach us is on our mobile phones:

BUBBLE (World Premiere screening in Masters) In this romantic tragedy from Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh, a bizarre love triangle is born at a doll factory in a small town fallen on hard times. Lonely and isolated, long time employees Martha and Kyle have become friends by default, but their dynamic is upset by the arrival of a new worker, young single mother Rose. As Martha skeptically speculates about Rose’s dubious character, she’s distraught to find Kyle and Rose developing a relationship of their own. These three workers strive to establish and maintain meaningful connections, but Rose’s violent death disrupts their routine lives and shatters their hopes. Featuring a cast of non-professional actors from the Ohio location, Soderbergh brings this tragic story to life with startling realism. JW+A is looking after the US and Canada on this title.

THANK YOU FOR SMOKING (World Premiere in Special Presentations ) – As Chief Spokesman for Big Tobacco, Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) has been called a lot of names: mass murderer, child killer, profiteer, bloodsucker, and even Yuppie Mephistopheles. It’s a tough assignment defending the rights of smokers and cigarette makers in today’s neo-puritanical culture. But, as Nick puts it, if he wanted an easy job he’d work for the Red Cross. Confronted by health zealots out to ban tobacco and an opportunistic senator (William H. Macy) who wants to put poison labels on cigarette packs, Nick goes on a PR offensive, spinning away the dangers of cigarettes on TV talk shows and enlisting a Hollywood super-agent (Rob Lowe) to promote smoking in movies. Nick’s newfound notoriety attracts the attention of both tobacco’s head honcho (Robert Duvall) and an investigative reporter for an influential Washington daily (Katie Holmes). Nick tells the reporter he is just doing what it takes to pay the mortgage, but he begins to think about how his work makes him look in the eyes of his young son Joey (Cameron Bright). Based on the acclaimed novel by Christopher Buckley, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING is a fiercely satirical look at modern spin culture. Written for the screen and directed by Jason Reitman, who makes his feature debut, THANK YOU FOR SMOKING also stars Maria Bello, Adam Brody, Sam Elliott, David Koechner, and JK Simmons. The film is produced by David O. Sacks. JW+A is looking after US and Canadian press.

LITTLE FISH (North American premiere in Special Presentations) – How do you learn to love again when the pain of the past won't let you go? When you're 32 with a troubled history and a doubtful future, it’s a question that isn't so easy to answer. And for Tracy Heart (Oscar winner Cate Blanchett), it's a question she can no longer ignore. After four years of treading water and redeeming herself in the eyes of her hard-working single mother, she has set herself the humble goal of owning her own business. But the unexpected return of her ex-boyfriend Jonny (Dustin Nguyen), the criminal aspirations of her brother Ray (Martin Henderson) and the emotional draw of troubled family friend and ex-rugby star Lionel Dawson (Hugo Weaving), creates friction for Tracy. Her dream soon becomes tangled with criminal boss, Bradley "The Jockey" Thompson (Sam Niell) with shattering consequences. As a result, Tracy's bond of trust with her mother Janelle (Noni Hazlehurst) is tested and she has to confront her fears to find happiness. SORRY,HATERS (World Premiere in Discovery) – SORRY,HATERS is a psychological thriller with political and social undertones set in today's New York. It's a story of anger, revenge and retribution so timely it could be true. It begins when Ashade, a Muslim cab driver (Abdellatif Kechiche), picks up Phoebe (Robin Wright Penn), a well-heeled professional woman. Although Ashade and Phoebe have nothing in common, each holds troubling urges and hidden motivations. When Phoebe takes an interest in exonerating Ashade's brother, a series of events is set in motion resulting in the revelation of a devastating hidden truth. SORRY,HATERS is that rare film that dares to capture the anxiety of a city – our city – on edge. With powerful performances by Robin Wright Penn, Abdellatif Kechiche, Sandra Oh and Josh Hamilton, it has the courage to ask the most forbidden questions about who we are, and suggest some surprising answers. ONE LAST THING ... (World Premiere in Contemporary World Cinema) – ONE LAST THING … is a poignant and funny story about Dylan, a 16 year-old kid who is living his life as fast as he can since he has brain cancer. A teenager with a vibrant personality and caustic wit, Dylan spends his last days trying to fulfill his one last wish: to spend the weekend with a Manhattan supermodel. The film also tells the deceptively simple, delicate and uplifting story of the effect that Dylan’s vitality and enthusiasm for life have on the people around him. In a performance that has the potential to become a teen classic, Dylan is played by Michael Angarano ("Sky High,” “Lords of Dogtown,“ "Seabiscuit,” “Almost Famous”). His mother is played by Cynthia Nixon (“Sex & the City”), and Sunny Mabrey (“XXX: State of the Union”) plays the supermodel, Nikki. Other members of the cast include Ethan Hawke as Dylan's late father, as well as Gina Gershon and Wyclef Jean. The film is produced by Jason Kliot, Joana Vicente and Susan Stover. ONE LAST THING … is directed by Alex Steyermark from a screenplay by Barry Stringfellow, who have been friends since they were twelve years old. JW+A is looking after the US and Canada on this title.

DEAR WENDY (Screening in Contemporary World Cinema) If you have ever fired or even held a handgun, you will immediately understand the seductive sense of empowerment felt by the protagonists that populate DEAR WENDY, the new film from Thomas Vinterberg (“The Celebration”). If you have managed to avoid firearms, take heed: Vinterberg himself has said, “Since I began work on DEAR WENDY I have found myself facing a series of disturbing thoughts and emotions regarding the love of weapons.” Perhaps inspired by how our American gun culture must look to outsiders, the film stars Jamie Bell as a young loner named Dick who discovers a vintage handgun and finds himself strangely drawn to it despite his pacifist views. Soon he forms a secret club with other misfits in his town who collect and revere antique guns and call themselves “The Dandies.” But despite their firm belief in the most important Dandy rule of all – “never draw your weapon” – they eventually discover that some rules are meant to be broken. Based on a screenplay by Lars Von Trier DEAR WENDY is a potentially controversial addition to the alienated youth genre. The film also stars Bill Pullman, Michael Angarano (“Sky High”), Mark Webber (“Broken Flowers”) and Chris Owen (“American Pie”). WELLSPRING will release DEAR WENDY on September 23 rd .
