OPERA NORTH EDUCATION TEACHING ARTIST (Clarinet) JOB DESCRIPTION & PERSONAL SPECIFICATION

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Opera North Education Teaching Artists deliver the instrumental programmes which are part of the Opera North Education programme; at the heart of this work is In Harmony.

POSITION IN ORGANISATION Reports to the In Harmony Manager; works closely with the Orchestral Education Leader and ON Education project managers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES General . Represent the company publicly as required . As a member of the Education Department at Opera North, play an active role in organisation-wide activities, including attending and supporting Opera North events . Contribute to the development and delivery of Opera North Education strategy as required . Be a champion for Opera North and its education programme . Maintain an awareness of relevant legislative requirements including health and safety, safeguarding of children and vulnerable adults and equal opportunities

Programme Delivery . As part of a team of Teaching Artists, deliver a high quality curriculum for the In Harmony programme (and other ONEd programmes where required) which integrates musicianship, instrumental skills and ensemble playing. . Deliver instrumental tuition and lead and support the In Harmony ensembles, where timetabled, providing support to children and ensuring good technique is being implemented . Conduct the In Harmony ensembles at rehearsals and performances where required. . Support the In Harmony management team in providing knowledge and practical advice where needed regarding instrument repairs, maintenance and instrument and accessory purchase. . Work closely with the team of Teaching Artists, Orchestral Education Leader and In Harmony Manager to make decisions about repertoire and curriculum, ensuring a level of coherence across the In Harmony and wider Opera North programme where appropriate. . Ensure rigorous monitoring and self-evaluation of teaching and learning methods, to track progress of all participating children and develop best practice. . Offer support, advice and expertise to children, staff and parents where appropriate. . Attend communication, planning and development meetings with other staff and company representatives as required.

2 Terms and Conditions

Salary range: £27,926 per annum (Pro Rata)

Hours of work: Normal hours of work will be 14 hours per week over 2 days, working Tuesday and Wednesday each week; however actual working hours in any given week may vary, and you will be paid for 14 hours work each week. Normal office hours will be according to the In Harmony timetable.

Normal place of work: The normal place of work is Leeds, however travel to other locations around the North of England, or further afield, may be required. You may also be required to attend the company on tour in the UK and abroad as necessary.

Holiday entitlement: 25 days plus 8 statutory holidays pro rata

Pension: Opera North will automatically enrol you into the company pension scheme after 3 months’ service and make a contribution equivalent to 5.5% of your basic pay, should you meet the current legislative criteria. You will not be required to make a personal contribution to qualify. Opera North reserve the right to make changes to the pension scheme.
