Dear Bromwell Parents

Dear Bromwell Parents,

The audition for Missoula Children's Theatre production of Alice in Wonderland will be held on Monday, October 21, 2013 at 3:30pm in the Bromwell gym. There are roles for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. Approximately 50-60 students will be cast to appear in the show with the MCT Tour Actor/Director. Students wishing to audition must arrive by 3:30pm and stay through 5:30pm. The first rehearsal begins approximately 15-30 minutes after the audition.

There is a charge of $65 per student to take part in this week of theater. (There will be no charge for performance tickets.) Selection is first-come, first-served within each age group, so this is not a traditional audition where some kids “make it” and some don’t. If a child is registered and behaves well at audition, they will get a part! Typically, the younger parts go first, so get in your registration quickly! I will notify everyone ASAP via e-mail which children have been registered.

Registration form is attached. Please complete it and personally drop it and your $65 check (per child) made out to ‘Bromwell PTA’ in the box marked ‘Missoula’ at the Front Desk. Remember to act quickly so your child won’t be disappointed!

Rehearsals will be conducted every day from 3:30pm to 5:30pm and 6pm to 8pm at school. (Youngest children will only practice from 3:30 to 5:30pm, except for Friday when there is also an evening performance.) Although not all cast members will be needed at every session, those auditioning must have a clear schedule for the entire week and if selected, be able to attend all rehearsals required for their role. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be distributed at the conclusion of the audition. Cast members scheduled for the full 4½ hours of rehearsal will be asked to bring a sack dinner each day.

The performances will be tentatively held on Friday 10/25 at 6:30pm and Saturday 10/26 at 1pm in the Multi-Purpose Room/Cafeteria. The students in the cast will be called for dress rehearsal before the performances. All those cast must be available for all scheduled practices and performances.

The Missoula Children's Theatre is a non-profit organization based in Missoula, Montana. This year more than 65,000 cast members across the globe will take to the stage to the delight and applause of their families, friends, community, neighbors and teachers! The Bromwell residency is paid for through student enrollment fees.

Feel free to call or e-mail me with questions!

SHOW SYNOPSIS

The Missoula Children’s Theatre presents ALICE IN WONDERLAND, an original adaptation based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The story begins with Alice and her older sister Margaret reading together. Margaret becomes frustrated, as Alice is curious about absolutely everything. Suddenly, a White Rabbit appears from nowhere. After a quick and nonsensical conversation, Alice follows the rabbit to a strange and wonderful place. In the course of her adventures, Alice meets a band of Flowers, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Knave and the rest of the suit of Cards, a giant Caterpillar, a Fish, a Frog, the Duchess, the Cook, the Cheshire Cat, the Gryphon, the Mock Turtle, a group of singing Lobsters, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the March Hare, the Mad Hatter, the Dormouse and Humpty Dumpty. Through it all, Alice grows “curiouser and curiouser” as to where she is and even who she is. In the end, the answers she seeks are unimportant. Wonderland is all nonsense, anyway. As the White Rabbit explains, “Nonsense is fun!”

PRE-REGISTRATION Pre-registration allows the Presenting Organization to sign-up cast members (within MCT’s requirements) in advance of the audition. Each child will be signed up for a part in the cast but not for a specific role. Once each age group is filled to capacity, (a total of 60 cast members and 4 assistant directors) no additional children may sign up. This eliminates the possibility of children being turned away at the audition. The registered children will then audition as described above and the TADs will assign roles.

AUDITION SCHEDULE Remember that the normal rehearsal schedule is two 2-hour sessions per day. Everyone is required to be present for the entire 2-hour audition. Due to time constraints, anyone missing the initial audition will not be considered in the casting of the show.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS During the audition, four to six Assistant Directors (ADs), ages ten and older, are selected to help teach and direct the show early in the week as well as take on technical responsibilities at performance time. Their logistical help and creative ideas are a vital part of our process and the experience of the ADs can be just as valuable as that of any cast member. They are normally older students who do take part in the audition session. It is a common misconception that junior high and high school students can only be involved in an AD capacity. Please note that there are roles in the show designed for older students as well.

NUMBER OF STUDENTS CAST Approximately 50-60 students will be cast in the show. There is no guarantee that everyone who turns in registration will be cast. Registration is first-come, first-served within each age group.
