ADDENDUM TO ANIMAL USE PROTOCOL B. ANIMALS: 2. Are standard animal husbandry and care practices adequate for the animals in this protocol? If not, please specify what deviations are necessary and provide a scientific justification for these changes. If animal care or housing is provided by the investigator, greater than twelve (12) hours, standard operating procedures for these activities must be completed (in consultation with LAR staff) using the Guidelines for Animal Housing and Care occurring Outside of LAR. A copy of these procedures must be approved by the LACUC at the time of animal use protocol and available at the site of animal housing and care.

GUIDELINES FOR ANIMAL HOUSING AND CARE OCCURRING OUTSIDE OF LAR 1. Responsibilities Indicate the laboratory personnel responsible for the health and welfare of the laboratory animals housed at this location outside of LAR. Include provisions for weekend and holiday care. 2. General a. Housing location: Indicate the location within the laboratory that animals are housed. b. Segregation: Indicate how the designated housing location has been separated from exposure to other laboratory activities. c. Specific housing requirements: Specify the type of containers used to house the animals, including consideration of animal densities, access to food and water, and sanitation. Indicate how laboratory environmental controls will be adjusted to accommodate animal needs. 3. Feed a. Food quality: Indicate how the animal diet was chosen, with consideration to species requirements, wholesomeness and quality of source. Include the feeding schedule and amounts. b. Water quality: Indicate how the purity of the water source will be assured. Include the schedule for water replenishment. 4. Health Checks Indicate how daily health checks will be performed. Specify which lab personnel are responsible for these checks and what criteria are used to assess the health of the animals. 5. Cage Sanitation Indicate the procedures and schedule for sanitation of animal containers. 6. Room Sanitation Indicate the procedures and schedule for sanitation of the laboratory area where animals are housed. 7. Documentation Indicate how the animal husbandry activities listed above will be recorded and how these records will be maintained.
