The Flame of God’s Presence
When visiting the classrooms in school, I sometimes ask the smaller children why we light Monday, February 29 candles in church. One little boy told me: “so we can 8:00 AM Holy Communion Service stay warm!” Another child said: “because if the lights 3:30-7:00 PM Eucharistic Adoration w/Vespers @ 6:30 go out, we can still see….” Ah, the wisdom and Tuesday, March 1 whimsy of little children! So, why do we light candles 8:00 AM Mass in church? Our first reading today from the book of Wednesday, March 2 Exodus gives us a hint. Moses is out tending the 8:00 AM Mass sheep one day when out of nowhere God’s voice Thursday, March 3 speaks to him through a “burning bush” or as the 8:00 AM Mass scripture says, “An angel appeared to him in fire Friday, March 4-First Friday flaming out of a bush.” Oftentimes in the Old 6:30 AM Mass (during Lent only) Testament God makes an appearance through fire, 8:00 AM Mass for example, when God led the Israelites through the 7:00 PM Stations of the Cross (during Lent desert by a “pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire only) by night.” Also, Moses received the 10 Commandments on a fiery mountain top. In the New Lord’s Day – The Fourth Sunday of Lent Testament the Holy Spirit on Pentecost appears above Saturday, March 5 each of the disciples as a “tongue of fire.” 5:00 PM Mass We light candles in church around the altar to Sunday, March 6 signify God’s presence among us. We light a special, 8:00 AM Mass red glass encased candle in the Eucharistic chapel to 10:30 AM Mass remind us that Jesus is truly present in His Body and 6:00 PM Mass Blood in the tabernacle. People light the blue or red vigil lights (candles) in church to ask for God’s special graces for various intentions. We light the Easter candle for fifty days during the Easter season to remind us of the resurrection of Jesus. As other times we light this candle during baptisms and funerals to Scripture Readings for March 6, 2016 remind us that Jesus is the light of the world, the Jos 5:9a, 10-12, 2 Cor 5:17-21, Lk 15:1-3, 11-32 beginning (Alpha) and the end (Omega) of our lives. Candle light will always be a powerful symbol Our 8:00 AM liturgy is on radio station WCIT 940 AM of God’s presence in our churches and hopefully, in each Sunday morning for our homebound or infirm our lives. During the feast of Pentecost we often pray: parishioners. The cost of this service is generously provided to the parish by Chamberlain-Huckeriede “Come, Holy Spirit, and enkindle within us the fire of Funeral Home. your love, Amen!”

In this session, we’ll talk about the stories in general and fairy tales more specifically, since these are the basis for the stories that are very popular today: fantasy and sci-fi. We’ll discuss the relevance of such “fairy tales” to our faith, our values and our lives as Christians. More specifically, we’ll see how the Christian mystery and Christian values are present in two “fairy story” franchises which are very popular today: Harry Potter and Star Wars. Finally, we’ll strategize how we can utilize these stories in our own ministry of evangelization: that is, in preaching the Gospel to the wider world.
