The following provides additional information and general expectations regarding the G.H.A.A. ‘Travel’ Basketball program.

Fundamental Principles

 Program is for the benefit of Germantown Hills residents (Pays GHills taxes) o Metamora (MYSA), Riverview, or other community players are allowed to tryout, but will only be considered if roster spots are available after Germantown Hills residents are accounted for and placed. o Exception: Players that live within the Metamora High School District and are not afforded the opportunity to try out for a local travel basketball program will be treated the same as Germantown Hills residents.  Travel Team Basketball Program is intended to provide a more competitive environment than that of the In-House/intramural league. o Travel Team participants may also register and play in the ‘In-House’ program in order to maximize ‘gym time’ and enhance their growth, development, and enjoyment of basketball. There may be game and practice conflicts.

Registration

 Online registration opens in August  Fees (as of 9/1/17): o $180 per participant (3rd - 5th grad) o $70 per participant (6th grade)  Divisions/Grade Levels - Pending # of registered participants, the following divisions will be offered: o Boys – 3rd, 4th & 5th Grades, 6th if interest . Players must be in at least 2nd grade to tryout* o Girls – 3rd/4th & 5th Grades, 6th if interest . Players must be in at least 3rd grade to tryout*

*Grade level restrictions may be adjusted based on registration numbers

Roster size

 Travel Team rosters will be limited to a maximum of 10 players. This limitation is being instituted in order to assist volunteer coaches in ensuring compliance with the ‘Playing Time’ guidelines identified below (see Appendix A.)  Due to limitations on gym availability for practices and games, as well as the availability of the ‘In-House’ program, secondary (or ‘B’) teams will not be selected or administered. Tryouts  Will occur only if the number of Germantown Hills residents exceeds Ten (10).  One or Two tryouts will be held within 2 week of the last scheduled signup date.  Tryouts will be conducted by at least (2), un-biased evaluators.  Team selection will occur within 2 days of the last scheduled tryout

Coaching Selections  Applications will be taken during signup period  Candidates will be selected by the GHAA Basketball Travel Director after the completion of tryout & team selection  Final selection may be subject to G.H.A.A. Board review & approval

Scheduling Expectations  Games o Home games will be played at the Germantown Hills Middle School . Ref: Appendix C: Facility Guidelines o 20-30 total games including ‘Regular Season’ and Tournaments*

* The G.H.A.A. will fund up to (4) tournaments, per team. Additional tournament participation will be at the discretion and cost of the individual team.

 Practices o 1 to 2 times per week o Held at the Germantown Hills Middle School pending gym availability . Ref: Appendix B: Facility Guidelines

Concerns, Issues, Complaints

The G.H.A.A. expects and entrusts its selected coaches to be an extension of the G.H.A.A. Board. Therefore, if you have questions, concerns, or issues regarding any of these guidelines, or with any situation that arises throughout the season, please feel free to address them directly with your child’s coach in private*. If for any reason, resolution is not possible at this level, please feel free to contact the G.H.A.A. Basketball Director. If necessary, the G.H.A.A Basketball Director will address the issue with the G.H.A.A. Board for review and resolution.

* Under no circumstance, should an issue be addressed or communicated in a public setting, in the company of players, or among other parents. *

Review Schedule

These ‘policies’ will be reviewed on an annual basis. Appendix A: Playing Time Guidelines

The G.H.A.A. Board expects the following guidelines to be followed with respect to playing opportunities:

1. Each participant/player should have an opportunity to participate in every scheduled game, regardless of how or why each game was scheduled (ie. ‘Tournament Games’ are not to be handled differently than ‘Regular Season’ games).

2. Playing Time expectations: a. 5 th Grade Level and above: This level should assume a more competitive nature, and therefore, it is reasonable to expect more playing time for higher skilled players. However, in order to ensure adherence to #1 above, a ‘75/25’ playing time guideline should be targeted. Ie. Participants should expect to play one quarter of each scheduled game. b. 4 th Grade Level: This level should be considered a ‘developmental’ experience for participants, with a more equitable opportunity for playing time in each game. Therefore, in order to ensure adherence to #1 above, a ‘60/40’ playing time target is expected in every scheduled game. c. 3 rd Grade Level: This level should be considered a ‘developmental’ experience for participants, with a more equitable opportunity for playing time in each game. Therefore, in order to ensure adherence to #1 above, a ‘50/50’ playing time target is expected in every scheduled game.

* ‘Relevant considerations’ should also include a distribution of playing time based on player skill level(s) and overall team success. Playing time should not be granted as a result of, or due to coaching or parental preference or relationship.

The G.H.A.A. will expect coaches to adhere to the general guidelines outlined above. However, coaches will not be asked to keep detailed playing time records, nor is it expected or acceptable for parents, or other concerned individuals to record detailed playing time logs. It is strongly recommended that an assistant coach be responsible for ensuring reasonable playing time distribution, thereby allowing the head coach to focus on ‘managing the game’.

Please refer to Appendix B: Substitution Matrix for a planning template to manage/ensure appropriate playing opportunities. Appendix B: Substitution Matrix & Examples

For planning purposes, the following represents a substitution matrix & examples which can be used by coaches to plan game time decisions. It is recommended that coaches utilize this tool prior to each game in order to consistently manage playing opportunities.

The G.H.A.A. requests that parents, coaches, and players adhere to the following guidelines when utilizing school facilities for practices and games. Failure to do so may impact our future use of the facilities.

 Players should remain in gym at all times – Coaches will be responsible for ensuring that players do not ‘wander the halls’.  Players should be escorted into gym to ensure coach is present. Parents/guardian/drivers are not to leave until such time as a coach is present (ie. No ‘Drop Offs’).  Parents/guardians/drivers are requested to return to the gym at the end of practice prior to coaches letting players leave.  Practices are for players ONLY. Siblings of team members are not allowed to attend practices unless accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the practice. Note: If absolutely necessary, coaches may bring siblings to practice as long as they remain in the gym with the team during the duration of the practice.

If you notice anything that may be ‘out of synch’, either before or after your scheduled practice time, please notify the G.H.A.A. Basketball director.
