Course Description The curriculum will focus on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two and three dimensional space and figures using distance, angle similarity, and congruence; and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. By the end of 8th grade, students will be able to:  Know that there are numbers that are not rational, and approximate them by rational numbers.  Work with radicals and integer exponents.  Understand the connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations.  Analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations.  Define, evaluate, and compare functions.  Use functions to model relationships between quantities.  Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software.  Understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem.  Solve real world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres.  Investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.

Curriculum Overview The following academic concepts will be covered. THIS IS ONLY A GUIDE AND IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

A variety of approaches, methodologies, and resources shall be used to deliver educational services and to maximize each student’s opportunity to succeed. Teachers shall evaluate student progress, report grades that represent the student’s academic achievement, and communicate official academic progress to students and parents in a timely manner through the electronic grading portal. See Board Policy IHA.

DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS FOR SUCCESS http://www.nctq.org/docs/Dekalb_Board_Policies.pdf STUDENT PROGRESS Semester progress reports shall be issued four and a half, nine and thirteen and a half weeks into each semester. The progress of students shall be evaluated frequently and plans shall be generated to remediate deficiencies as they are discovered. Plans shall include appropriate interventions designed to meet the needs of the students. See Board Policy IH. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY Students will not engage in an act of academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, providing false information, falsifying school records, forging signatures, or using an unauthorized computer user ID or password. See the Code of Student Conduct - Student Rights and Responsibilities and Character Development Handbook. HOMEWORK Students will have homework daily. Assignments are expected to be completed and submitted on time (typically the next day). AN ASSIGNMENT CONTAINING ONLY ANSWERS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and a zero will be placed in the grade book. Students must show their work for each problem to earn credit. Assignments must be written neatly in notebook, in pencil (only), and have the proper heading (last, first name; Pre-Algebra w/ class period; date and assignment). Assignments that are: written in ink, not neat, and are on torn and/or soiled paper will not be accepted. Please check my website and the online parent portal regularly to make sure your child is turning in his or her homework. The websites below will assist students with homework: 1. www.mathforum.com 2. www.purplemath.com 3. www.mathway.com 4. www.mathplayground.com

Homework assignments should be meaningful and should be an application or adaptation of a classroom experience. Homework is at all times an extension of the teaching/learning experience. It should be considered the possession of the student and should be collected, evaluated and returned to the students. See Board Policy IHB. MAKE-UP WORK MISSED ASSIGNMENTS DUE TO ABSENCES For every day that a student misses an assignment the grade will be reduced by 20% therefore by the sixth day the assignment will hold no value and will not be accepted for a grade. The last day that missed assignments will be accepted for the 1 st semester is December 11, 2015 and 2 nd semester is May 12, 2016 . Therefore, any missed assignment on that day or after will not be received for a grade.

MAKE UP WORK Announced work, such as homework, quizzes, tests, and other major assessments are due the day the student returns. For each day’s excused absence, students will have one day to make up missed work. If a student is absent under extenuating circumstances, special arrangements can be made to make up work. IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK THE WEBSITE AND /OR REQUEST MISSED WORK. STUDENTS CAN ALWAYS CHECK THE HOMEWORK WEB PAGE FOR ASSIGNMENTS WHEN ABSENT. If an assignment is not submitted and/or does not meet the expectation, then the student must complete and /or re-do the assignment during one or more of the outlined Safety Nets. o Extended Learning Time, if applicable. o Academic Lunch (Thursdays) TRAILER #1 o Homework RE-DO’S When students miss an assignment and it is not excused a grade of zero is entered in the grade book. When a student earns a grade of 70 or less they are encouraged to re-do the assignment for a higher grade and for better accuracy of the concepts. Twenty points will be subtracted from the new grade to replace the previous grade. In order for a re-do to be accepted the assignment must meet the following credentials: o Assignment grade is below 71 o All incorrect problems must be written out along with answers o Must be done on a separate sheet of lined paper o Must be headed correctly with assignment # in upper right corner o Must have the word RE-DO at the top center of paper o The original assignment must be attached to the back of re-do o Must be corrected in RED ink and scored before turning in.

*ACADEMIC LUNCH IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO GET THIS DONE!*

When a student is absent because of a legal reason as defined by Georgia law or when the absence is apparently beyond the control of the student, the student shall be given an opportunity to earn grade(s) for those days absent. Make-up work must be completed within the designated time allotted. See Board Policy IHEA.

PARENT PORTAL / INFINITE CAMPUS TO VIEW GRADES It is very simple to get an account. Parents and students are able to have individual accounts. Once an online account has been made then an app may be obtained for smart phones. . See Board Policy IHEA.
