The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre

Job description: Museum Director Reports to: The Museum’s Trustees Responsible for: All staff (see staffing chart) Hours: 37 hours per week

Main purpose of the post: a. To work proactively with the Trustees to develop strategic vision and forward plans for the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre. b. To be responsible for the leadership and day-to-day management of the Museum.

Main tasks:

1. Governance a) To advise the Board of Trustees on all matters relating to the management, development and forward planning for the Museum and Trading Company. b) To prepare reports for Trustees’ meetings. c) To prepare annual reports. d) To ensure that the Museum complies with current Charity Law.

2. Strategy, Vision and Policies a) To develop and maintain a strategic vision for the Museum. b) To prepare and implement a forward plan and to monitor its progress on a regular basis. c) To review the strategic documents and liaise with the Trustees on a regular basis. d) To write and review all Museum policies or have oversight of these if appropriately delegated.

3. Financial and Business Management a) To develop the Museum’s business model and review its progress on a regular basis. b) To develop and implement income generation and grant seeking strategies to ensure ongoing long term funding for the Museum. c) To oversee the preparation of the Museum’s annual budgets. d) To oversee the Museum’s shop, including its online sales operation, and other income- generating activities. e) To oversee and monitor the expenditure of the Museum.

4. Staff Management a) To manage the staff and direct their work through a structured programme of meetings. b) To undergo appraisal and to carry out appraisals on staff. c) To build and develop the strengths and talents of the staff. d) To oversee all personnel issues and that the Museum complies with current Employment Law.

5. Operational Management a) To monitor the overall performance of the Museum. b) To ensure that all visitors receive an excellent standard of customer care, and that all written and verbal enquiries are dealt with appropriately. c) To ensure that the Museum is well cared for and maintained to a high standard. d) To ensure adequate staff cover for the operation of the Museum on a day to day basis. e) To be a duty officer.

6. Marketing and Public Relations a) To maintain and develop audiences by ensuring that the Museum is effectively advertised and marketed and that its sections of the Roald Dahl website are properly maintained. b) To be the media spokesperson for the Museum.

7. Education and Writer-in-Residence a) To oversee the development and maintenance of the education policy and programme. b) To oversee the artist residency programme.

8. Display and Collections Management a) To plan, research, develop and deliver new exhibitions/galleries as appropriate. b) To ensure that the Museum achieves Accreditation. c) To ensure loans to and from the Museum’s collections are properly documented and organised. d) To ensure the semi-permanent displays are properly monitored, maintained and replaced as appropriate.

9. Training and Networking a) To undergo appropriate training to maintain up-to-date professional knowledge. b) To represent the Museum in the wider literary and heritage world and take an active role in it. c) To develop and maintain a good relationship with residents and community groups.

10.Health and Safety and Risk a) To manage health and safety at the Museum, ensuring that the Museum complies with current Health and Safety law. b) To assess, mitigate and manage risk at the Museum. c) To work to prevent fraud.

11.Other a) To carry out any other duties that may be reasonably required by the Board of Trustees. b) To carry out all duties in accordance with the policies of the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre and its Trustees. c) To take reasonable care of the health, safety and welfare of self, other persons and resources while at work and in the course of service delivery, in accordance with the responsibilities placed on the Charity under the ‘Health and Safety at Work Act’ and other relevant legislation.
