Ian Funchess Student Testimony My Experience
In Ms.Fillion’s class I was given the task of coaching a football team with the girls in my class. My first initial thought was that I needed more boys in my class or team to make it a competitive game but little did I know these girls that I was given to be on my team were eager to learn more about the sport of football and were even more eager to play it. They told me upfront on how they really didn’t know any of the football terms but they know the movements of the game giving me an idea of how I should coach them. Ms. Fillion told me that this task wasn’t going to be easy because playing an organized sport with females isn’t easy. She challenged me to do better even more so to win in an orderly fashion. When she informed me and the other team captain that this whole exhibition game was going to be led by us the students I was a bit surprised and nervous.
More so nervous because when you have a teacher like
Ms. Fillion she keeps the order and the fairness in the game making it so it’s both educational and fun. Giving this type of power or leadership roles to students gives them more self-confidence and it develops them in future leaders and better role players in a team setting.
Personally I enjoyed this experience because it brought me and my team members more closer meaning we are more comfortable around each other. Some of the girls that were on my team still call me coach as a joke in the hallways at school. We should have more lessons like this or we should encourage people to add this to the physical education curriculum because it benefits more than just the physical aspect of the curriculum.
