State Honors Cam Young and Jake Westerkamp

List of Ohio Water Polo First team, Second Team (Cam Young) and Honorable Mention (Jake Westerkamp) Players. 2012 Season Awards

Most Improved - Nate Sultan (Class of 2013) came to a St Xavier water polo practice on a Saturday in August with the intention that it would be his last. Thankfully, he continued coming to practice on a consistent basis and eventually became a starter, a dominant field player (with one of the strongest arms in the state), and the team's third leading scorer.

Scholar-Athlete - Cameron Young (Class of 2013) has been a 2 year starter for the St Xavier team (1st year playing as "AMDG Club Water Polo"). The "Athlete" part of this award was easy. Cameron was an All-South player in Ohio in 2012 (voted by Ohio's coaches) and was 5th in Ohio last year in the 200 freestyle. This year, Cameron, a Captain, led the Bombers in scoring and otherwise. Cameron also maintains the highest grade point average of all senior water polo players.

The "Doc C" Magis Award - Ben Hopper (Class of 2013) became one of Ohio's finest goalies in his first year playing water polo. Ben possesses and consistently demonstrates all of the attributes recognized by the Doc C Magis Award (described below): outstanding athleticism; tireless hard work; committed leadership; faith; and unselfishness. Doc C and Ben are pictured here.

Congratulations to Nate, Cam, and Ben!

History of the "Doc C" Magis Award. After several years of dormancy, the St Xavier Water Polo Team resurfaced in 2011 as "AMDG Water Polo Club." AMDG is, of course, the acronym for Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam, Latin for "to the greater glory of God" and the motto of the Society of Jesus. And Magis - which is taken from Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam - is a Latin word that means "the more." Magis refers to the philosophy of doing more, for Christ, and, therefore, for others. It is an expression of an aspiration and inspiration. The St Xavier Water Polo team's "Doc C" Magis Award honors Dr. T. Courtney Roberts. Courtney - or "Doc C" - was the Captain, leading scorer, and undisputed heart of St Xavier's 1979 water polo team (St Xavier's only state champion squad to date). The award recognizes that water polo player who, like Doc C, best exemplifies faith and unselfish leadership as well as athletic contributions. About Doc C: Courtney first learned to play water polo during the early 1970s when the Cincinnati Marlins floated a team. After starting for the Bombers' water polo team for four years and leading the team to a State Championship his senior year, Courtney continued his water polo career at Harvard University where he was a starting field player and leader. While a pre-med student at Harvard, Courtney was also a member of the school's nationally ranked swimming team. While Courtney's athletic accomplishments are numerous (at age 50 he still holds 8&U city-wide swimming records; he was one of the first Aquabombers inducted into the St X Hall of Fame as the result of his individual and team performances on 4 state champion swim teams; he captained Harvard's swimming team and participated in multiple NCAA and Olympic Trial competitions; he has swum around the island of Manhattan and the English Channel, and has run many marathons) they pale in comparison to his gentle spirit, faith, and the unselfish contributions he has made to his family, church, St Xavier, and the community. For the past decade, Dr. Roberts has chosen to practice medicine at Crossroads Health Center in the Over-The-Rhine area of Cincinnati, where he serves the underserved and underprivileged. Dr. Roberts is also a volunteer coach for the St Xavier Water Polo team, is active in St Gertrude Parish, and is a rock for his 18 nieces and nephews to whom he devotes the balance of his time and love. Everyone who comes into contact with Courtney's faithful and gentle spirit is better for it. Cameron Young selected for 2012 All-Regional Team

Senior Cameron Young was honored after this weekend's Regional Tournament by being selected to the All Regional Water Polo Team for the South Region. The list for both Ohio Regions can be found here. The Water Polo Bombers started off the weekend by losing their first game to Sycamore and moving down to the consolation bracket, whose winner would be the #2 seed for the State Tournament. St X beat Milford 13-7 and Princeton 8-6 before eventually succumbing to Mason in a hard fought 12-10 game. Upper Arlington and Sycamore will represent the South Region in this weekend's State Championship Tournament against North opponents, Toledo St Francis de Sales and Thomas Worthington of Columbus.
