Furman University (SC) offers some unique minors, including Ancient Greek and Roman Studies, Poverty Studies and Black Cultures in America. MyMajors.com offers a free app that’s compatible with Android Tablets and Smartphones. DePaul University (IL) has created The Alliance for Health Sciences with Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science. This will provide even more opportunities or DePaul students to engage in undergraduate research. Worchester Polytechnic Institute (MA) recently announced a new science degree program in Architectural Engineering. The University of the Arts is introducing three new programs for fall 2013: Film Studies (BS); Creative Writing (BFA); and a 5-Year Master’s of Arts in Teaching in Visual Arts (BFA/MAT). Forbes Magazine rates Miami University (OH) as the “best” public university in Ohio. At Wheaton College (MA) as part of the New Plays Festival there is a 10-Minute Plays portion in which students write a 10-minute play based on a random object produced by a visiting artist and stage the play within a week. The motto of Virginia Tech, Ut Prosim, means “That I may Serve.” Rider University recently launched a Summer Science Institute for undecided students who are considering majors in the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). The Five Colleges of Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College and UMass Amherst offer cross registration opportunities, as well as shared extra-curricular and food and travel opportunities. Colgate University was founded in 1819 by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers! Seton Hall University (NJ) was founded in 1856 by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley who names the college after his aunt, Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint. Students who visit Rockhurst University (MO), a Jesuit institution in Kansas City, can have travel expenses up to $500 reimbursed.
PS – Virtually every college with an application deadline in early November has extended its deadline for at least a week because of the damage from hurricane Sandy.
