Tips for preparing a successful proposal.

1. Follow the instructions. 2. Submit on time and through required channels. 3. Make no mistakes, typos, or grammatical errors. 4. Be clear, concise, and coherent. 5. Tell a story: describe the background, list your questions, your plot to distinguish among alternative hypotheses, anticipated difficulties and conclusions, and time-line. 6. Highlight what gaps will be filled, why its novel or transformative, how it will open new areas of inquiry. 7. Include a perfect cv, 8. a detailed budget justification, resources and environment statement, letters of support, 9. and a punchy title. 10.Make sure all reports, protocol approvals, and training are complete. 11.Review and revise.

As a graduate student, no grant is too small. Ask to read successful proposals and applications; learn from their style.

Grants are used for the support of research on bird species found either permanently or seasonally in Alaska or its coastal waters, including their biology, general ecology and habitat relationships. Research specific to management of bird species is given preference. $15,000 stipend, last due date November 16, 2009

Global Change Student Grant Competition http://www.cgc.uaf.edu/student_grant/Competition.html One of the Center's major activities is the annual Global Change Student Research Grant Competition, which has funded both graduate and undergraduate research projects since its inception in 1992. Maximum award amounts have increased significantly, and the competition is now open to students at both UAF and UAA. There is a renewed emphasis on undergraduate as well as graduate student.
