Student Senate Minutes NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Cabrillo College Student Senate will hold a meeting on Thursday February 21st, 2013. The meeting time and location information is noted on the agenda. The purpose of this meeting is to be the direct representation of Cabrillo College’s Student Body. We will see to it that the student’s best interests are being served and that the students are given the opportunity to be heard. If you have any questions, please contact us at 831.477.5677. President Announcements 5 Minutes VI. Special Items A. Sueños Presentation Info. / Action A. González 10 Minutes This item up for discussion / possible action regarding the approval of $2,000.00 from the ____ Account for a presentation that Sueños would like to give at Cabrillo regarding the African presence and identity in Mexican culture. This includes bringing a professor and two dance instructors from Oaxaca, Mexico to share knowledge and information at this presentation.  Sueños is a Cabrillo College club that serves and creates a space for marginalized and under-represented students.  The club educates students on their academic opportunities and rights as Cabrillo College students.  The club is hosting an educational event at the end of April, which will include lecture series by Native Oaxacan professors, Traditional Oaxacan dance workshops and more on African Mexican culture.  Sueños is asking the Senate to sponsor the transportation costs for two professors which will give lecture series throughout two weeks. Food and refreshments funds have already been fundraised for.  The Sueños event will take place at both Aptos and Watsonville campuses.  History, art, dance and music classes will be formally invited, as the event is open to the Cabrillo College community at large. Abby moved to approve $2,000 from the Cultural Events account for the Sueños event in April. Cedar seconded the motion. Passes by majority vote 9/2/0.

B. Senate Sponsorship of TedX event Info. / Action C. Frost 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding the Student Senate sponsoring a live broadcast of a TedX conference on Wednesday, February 27th, 2013 that will be happening all day. This sponsorship will allow those who are running the event be able to use a classroom at Cabrillo without being charged.  TedX Santa Cruz was formed three years ago and serves as a free speech space for members of the community.  TedX hosts live online casts which run approximately 13 minutes. Throughout one session which runs from 8 am – 6pm, 36 talks will be given.  The sessions are free of charge and open to everyone.

 Overall the mission of TedX is to identify the best ideas in our community and provide a platform for people to talk about those ideas. All TedX sessions are followed by 2 hour open discussions which allow people to digest the information and asks questions to the speakers. Carter moved to approve that the Student Senate sponsor and support the TedX event on February 27, 2013 at Cabrillo College. Laura seconded the motion. Passes unanimously 11/0/0.

Video Conferencing Equipment Info. / Action B. Buckter 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding the approval of $1,000.00 from the 73, Equipment Account to purchase video conferencing equipment.  Student organizations on campus are not being provided with convenient ways to meet. I believe that the student organizations need better equipment to facilitate active group meetings between Aptos and Watsonville campuses.  The video conferencing equipment would be used by Cabrillo College clubs as well as the Student Senate.  The equipment would have to stay inside Cabrillo College premises at all times and need to be checked out and checked in systematically.  Please think about this item and form questions for next weeks meeting when we will review this item again. C. Laptop for Secretary Info. / Action D. Constantino 10 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding the approval of $1,000.00 from the 73, Equipment Account to purchase a laptop for our secretary to use. ITEM POSTPONED UNTIL NEXT WEEK. D. Summer Retreat Info. / Action. C.Achen 15 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding choosing where and when the Student Senate Summer retreat will be held for the 2013 -14 Senate.  After all the research of finding an alternative location, the Senate has decided to host the Summer Retreat at Mission Springs.  The 2013 – 2014 Senate’s retreat will be held on the weekend of August 30th 2013, the weekend before school starts. Devin moved to approve the 2013- 2014 Summer Retreat be held at Mission Springs from August 31st - September 2nd Cedar seconded the motion. Passes by majority vote 9/2/0.

VIII. Committee Reports 3 minutes ea.  The cafeteria committee met last Friday, and plans to meet tomorrow morning at 9am in the cafeteria along with the project manager and facilities manger for light and floor planning.  The MLK committee met last Friday where we visited the recital hall and discussed the logistics of the event with the Recital Hall Director.  The Faculty Senate met last Tuesday and discussed curriculum and student success. The Faculty Senate is addressing what student success means at Cabrillo College, so please provide any input you may have.  Welcome Week Committee will meet tomorrow to discuss final details and planning for next weeks events. Please participate and sign up for volunteer positions.  March in March is meeting tomorrow, Friday, at 2pm  Legislative Meeting is meeting next week on Thursday at 2pm

President: Charlotte Achen – It has been brought to the Senate’s attention that the cafeteria is experiencing issues with their cash registers and their tip jars. Please consider this comment and inquire as to what is the root of this issue. Vice President: Laura Hunerberg – Please remember to announce Senate meetings and events in your classrooms!!! Treasurer: Darwin Constantino – I plan on attending the academic counseling meeting next week so keep an ear out for what news will come to the Senate regarding the academic counseling meeting. Legislative Representative: Aimée Cornett Student Trustee: Cedar Green Inter-Club Council Chair: Devin Monahan – The ICC’s first meeting was yesterday and many clubs have registered. During our first meeting we reviewed ICC formalities and expectations. Constantino 15 Minutes This item is up for discussion / possible action regarding the approval of $250 from the Executive Board Discretionary Funds Account for Birthday Recognitions.  The Budget Code states that there are 3 Senate Executive discretionary funds totaling $250.00  Professional organizations with large number of employees often celebrate and acknowledge birthdays in order to increase moral.  The Senate has celebrated birthdays as a culture of community and support in the past, and I believe that the Senate should fund reimbursements for prior Senate birthday expenses. Laura moved to approve $75.00 from the 73 Executive Board Discretionary Funds for Birthday reimbursements. Darwin seconded the motion. Passes by majority vote 5/1/0.

C. Discussion of Meeting 10 Minutes  The meeting went quickly and smoothly. D. Discussion of Senate 5 Minutes  Senator Conference Reports seem to be an issue that we need to address more closely.  As the Senate agreed, senators that don’t give conference reports will experience voting probations.
