Sixth Grade Math Syllabus for 2014-2015
Objective: At Cartersville Middle School, we actively seek to understand our students’ knowledge, skills, and talents so that we can provide an appropriate match for their learning needs. In response to individual strengths and weaknesses, we will adapt instruction while moving forward to mastery of the Georgia Performance Common Core Mathematical Standards, as well as, the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Our students must be prepared to compete in the global economy, which requires an increasing level of knowledge and skills in mathematics.
Common Core Standards: The students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following standards:
Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problem. Apply and extend previous understanding of multiplication and division to dived fractions by fractions. Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples. Apply and extend previous understanding of numbers to the system of rational numbers. Apply and extend previous understanding of arithmetic to algebraic expressions. Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities. Represent and analyze quantitative relationships between dependent and independent variables. Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area and volume. Develop understanding of statistical variability. Summarize and describe distributions.
Standards for Mathematical Practice: The students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the following standards:
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. For a very specific list of the standards, please refer to www.georgiastandards.org 6th Grade Mathematics Standards. In the honors course, we will enrich the curriculum by increasing the rigor (Depth of Knowledge) and relevance. Students will build relationships that support Quadrant D learning and assessment (Rigor and Relevance Framework). The students’ learning experience will be enhanced through the application of several real-world situations and multiple representations. Students will be required to work effectively in groups and engage in higher order questioning.
Instruction and assessment will include the appropriate use of manipulatives and technology. Topics should be represented in multiple ways, such as concrete/pictorial, verbal/written, numeric/data-based, graphical, and symbolic. Concepts should be introduced and used, where appropriate, in the context of realistic phenomena. In mathematics, we will also support the “25 Book Standard” through the incorporation of appropriate literature.
Evaluation: Grades will be based on a combination of daily work, quizzes, tests, projects, tasks, etc. Ten percent (10%) of the students’ grade will come from homework, thirty percent (30%) from daily tasks, class work, and journals. The remaining sixty percent (60%) will come from major assessments, which include, but are not limited to, chapter tests/unit tests, projects, tasks and exams. Cumulative exams will be given each semester. Please make sure that your name, assignment title, date, and class period are on ALL of your assignments. “No Name” papers will be considered as a missing assignment.
Absences and Make-Up Work: Students are responsible for asking the teacher for any work missed when not present in class. If you miss a test/quiz, it is your responsibility to schedule a time to take that test/quiz. All make-up work should be completed within the number of days absent plus one (For example: If a student is out 2 days, then he/she has 3 days to make up the work). If you are absent when an assignment is due, please plan on turning the assignment in when you return.
Instructional Materials and Resources: Students will be issued a consumable textbook. Other sources supported by the National Council of Mathematics will be used during the year to supplement curriculum. Lost book must be paid for at the replacement cost. Some websites that may assist you at home are the following: www.coolmath.com, www.aaamath.com, www.figurethis.org, https://www.khanacademy.org/
Expectations: Students are expected to be present in class daily. It is imperative that students are prepared for class, including a pencil, homework, math binder (textbook and paper), and library book. Please see classroom procedures and expectations for more details. When homework is assigned, usually Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, students are expected to complete their work on time and have it labeled correctly. Late work will be accepted one day late with a penalty of 10 points.
Cartersville Middle School No Zero Policy:
Cartersville Middle School has implemented a policy that will not allow students to earn a zero on any assignment. Students will be given the opportunity to complete any missing or unfinished assignments during a working lunch. Students will be expected to eat their lunch while working quietly on their individual assignments. Students will attend working lunch until the assignment is completed correctly, which could be one lunch period or five. Students who are constantly sent to working lunch may incur additional consequences if the behavior is not corrected.
Students are responsible for keeping up with assignments and due dates; whenever possible, helpful websites, Power Points, class notes, task rubrics, assignments and upcoming test dates will be posted to the teacher’s classroom webpage. To access the webpage, please go through the school website: http://ms.cartersville.k12.ga.us/
