TEACHING—Programs Developed Specialization in Psychiatric Rehabilitation Specialized course of study provides students in the rehabilitation counseling program with the essential background, theory, knowledge and methods to maximize their effectiveness with individuals who have mental health difficulties. Can be completed in conjunction with the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certificate. Psychiatric Rehabilitation Certificate The 15 unit (five-course) post-baccalaureate certificate provides professional with theoretical constructs and applied knowledge in counseling, career development and supports for individuals with psychiatric disabilities.

TEACHING—Courses Developed 2008—Seminar in Qualitative Methods of Inquiry (ARP 851)[With Frank Harris III] Doctoral course provides experiential learning in participant observation, interviewing, and data analysis. 2008—Portrayals of Individuals with Psychiatric Disabilities in Film: Attitudes, Treatments and Implications for Social Change (ARP 744: Practicum in Rehabilitation Counseling) Selected films are viewed and analyzed to discover 1) how media both reflects and shapes attitudes toward psychiatric disabilities, and 2) as a springboard for learning factual information about psychiatric disabilities. 2008—International Issues in Psychiatric Rehabilitation [with Nan Zhang Hampton] (ARP 740: Advanced Seminar in Rehabilitation Counseling) Course examines attitude formation, psychiatric disability services and assessment in an international context. Experiential and research components form the core of the learning experience. 2005—Seminar in Psychiatric Rehabilitation (ARP 740: Advanced Seminar in Rehabilitation Counseling) Course covers advanced psychiatric rehabilitation literature and principles and their application in rehabilitation settings. Evidence based and best practices are emphasized.

7 Marjorie F. Olney ______2004—Fieldwork in Psychiatric Rehabilitation (ARP 743: Fieldwork in Rehabilitation Counseling) Course explores the recovery model of psychiatric rehabilitation. Topics include co-occurring disorders, supported employment, consumer and family perspectives, evidence-based practices, and motivational interviewing.

1999—Disability in American Society: Issues and Perspectives (CHLTH 301: The University of Illinois). Course presents a range of issues pertaining to disability including demographics, disability rights, services, policies and current issues. The course applies a disabilities studies perspective, in which individuals’ impairments are seen to result from socially imposed barriers.
