1 Purpose

The purpose of this discussion is assessment for proposal of Seagate “Time-Limited Read/Write Mode Proposal” by aspect of set box manufacturing companies. Almost of Japanese set box manufacturing companies attend IDEMA-JAPAN Consumer-HDD committee and discuss about this proposal. IDEMA- JAPAN Consumer-HDD committee was held on Sep. 25th . Proposal from Seagate “Time-Limited Read/Write Mode” was explained by Mr. Okumura, Seagate.

2. Discussion & Comment Summary

Comment-1 ; Seagate simple concept can be understood. But, extensibility is required at AV command for the future.

Comment-2 ; If read and write CCTL are required to define independently, Set Feature is required every command. It’s too busy.

Comment-3 ; Seagate AV mode: Reallocation is not carried out. PC mode: At some condition, reallocation is carried out. (Spec - undecided). 1532D AV command: Reallocation isn’t defined. (Future discussion)

Comment-4 ; Need confirmation. => What’s happen, when command completion time comes at data transferring between interfaces?

Answer => Set SE(Stream Error)=1, then stop data transfer.

Counter Comment => It’s not enough to define error. SE=1 means several errors.

Comment-5 ; Need confirmation. => Seagate error command can’t find error sector. Error log isn’t supported, that’s the problem. 1532D AV command can find error sector.

Comment - 5 was answerd by Mr.James Hatfield.

READ LOG EXT * log x20 (Streaming Performance Log) * ONLY for ATA-7 * log x21 (Write Stream Error Log) * provided by both schemes * log x22 (Read Stream Error Log) * provided by both schemes

Status Register * SE (Streaming Error) bit * same behaviour supported by both schemes * ERR (Streaming Error) bit * same behaviour supported by both schemes * DWE (Deferred write error) * ONLY for time-limited mode

LBA hi/mid/low registers * reports the LBA of the first sector in error * same behaviour supported by both schemes

Sector Count register * reports the length of the error (e.g. the number of sectors that did not have good data) * same behaviour supported by both schemes

Intention of IDEMA-JAPAN ( Explained on 26th June.)

• Set box manufacturing companies of the committee member really need to standardize AV command. To reject confusion and to get compatibility of alternate or future HDD.

=> Single standard should be needed.

• IDEMA-JAPAN consumer HDD committee agrees basic concept of current ATA-7 AV commands. However IDEMA-JAPAN consumer HDD committee requests some modification to avoid misunderstanding as well as to use them effectively.

=> Set box manufacturing companies need standard AV command A.S.A.P.
