Hilary Napper 33 Brooks Road, Honorary Secretary STREET, BA16 0PN Tel: 01458 445648 Chairman's Annual Report 2014-15 Dear Members

My first year as Chairman has been varied, eventful and busy. I have included my Events Annual Report within this letter as doing the two tasks together seemed sensible.

At the AGM in September I shall again be asking for volunteers to join the committee. We meet monthly on the morning of our meetings and would welcome any new 'blood' with some new ideas. At present the committee is small in numbers, consequently it is the same people doing the same jobs. Please give this some thought. Nominations can be made on the evening.

Our meetings continue to be well supported. We try to make them varied across the year and suggestions for speakers are always welcome. The role of Events Secretary needs a change and I would be happy to assist anyone willing to take it on. Finally if any members feel they can help the Society in any way please speak to a member of the Committee.

Our events in September 2014 began with the Heritage Open Day when Clarks Shoe Museum and the Friends' Meeting House were open to the public. At the AGM Martin Horler talked about the 'Role of the Royal Mail Guard' whilst wearing the costume of a Guard. This proved to be both interesting and amusing. In October, Chris Hill gave a talk with pictures on the devastating floods of 2012 which affected the Levels.

Unfortunately the speaker for November did not make the meeting. Members spent time discussing various topics. The Committee has now devised a quiz should there be a problem with a future speaker.

Our Christmas celebration took place in the Mission Church where the ladies choir 'Street Sings' entertained us. We followed this with a buffet tea including cake!

In January Committee member Neil Clarke told us about his time working at C & J Clark and latterly pursuing his hobby of photography. Alan Cotton told us of 'The History of the Post Office in Street and Glastonbury' in February. In March, Jane Hill from the Hinkley Point Outreach Project told the meeting about archaeology in the area of the power station.

In April, 18 members visited Burns the Bread in Glastonbury. An entertaining and appetising evening was spent with Mr Burns and his family. Members made pasties which were cooked and taken home. The evening finished with a buffet supper.

May began the summer events with a walk around Historic Bridgwater. This was enjoyed by our members and Bridgwater Society members hope to arrange a similar visit to Street next year. In June there was a visit to the Walled Garden at Cannington College and in July afternoon tea at Sharpham Tea Rooms.

Finally thanks to Pauline Jones and Pam Pitman who provide the welcome tea and coffee at the meetings. Also thanks to the committee, without whom the Street Society could not function and flourish.

To members, keep coming to the meetings, bring your ideas and volunteer if you feel able.

Best wishes
