St. Luke Lutheran Church (ELCA), a medium to large growing congregation located in north Spokane, Washington is seeking a Worship Coordinator to plan, organize and coordinate inspired and creative worship experiences for both traditional and modern worship services. Additionally, vocal and/or instrumental leadership in worship is helpful for the modern worship service (but not the traditional). This position could be either one full-time position with benefits or two half-time positions: one for traditional worship planning and one for planning and leading the modern worship. Job Title: WORSHIP COORDINATOR Reports To: Pastor, Worship and Music Committee Supervisor: Pastor, Church Administrator

SUMMARY: The Worship Coordinator(s) generates the highest quality worship service possible to the glory of God. The Coordinator is organized and strives for creativity, artistry and attention to detail in planning worship and producing bulletins (collaboratively with the Church Secretary). Vocal and/or instrumental leadership in worship is required for the modern worship service. If this position is filled by one coordinator, equal passion and attention will be given to both traditional and modern worship planning. If there are two coordinators (traditional and modern), each will support the planning and worships of the other and will strive to create unity between worship communities. Faithful prayer and the presence of the Holy Spirit are essential to this position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Primary Responsibilities for Traditional Worship Coordinator

. Study the Biblical texts for each service. . Maintain regular communication with the Pastor to verify scripture readings, the Sermon topic and need for pulpit supply. . Create the weekly bulletin by selecting hymns, prayers, readings and liturgies and placing them in the format for worship. Choose appropriate hymns to support the Biblical message for the day. Hymns, worship songs and liturgical format will come from a variety of resources. . Lead Worship and Music Committee meeting each month: o Present plans for the next month’s worship services for discussion, including, but not limited to hymns chosen, new formats and ideas for enriching the service. o During the first year in this position, choose hymns for the coming month and present them to the Worship and Music Committee for input, approval or revision. o Submit significant worship changes for input, approval or revision by the committee. o Facilitate a positive working relationship with the Pastor and Worship and Music Committee. . Meet monthly with the Altar Guild to communicate worship details (e.g. schedule changes, Communion details, baptisms, special worship ideas, etc.). . Plan and review special services to include: Advent, Christmas Eve and Day, Ash Wednesday, Lenten services, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving and other celebration services. . Prepare a computer slide show for the time before worship begins to attractively communicate announcements, the Psalm reading for the week, upcoming events, worship times, etc. . Ensure that the PA system is functional for worship and other events (weddings, funerals, etc.). . Strive to schedule special music regularly for each worship service, involving the Chancel Choir, Hand Bell Choir, child/youth choruses and instrumental and vocal musicians from the congregation. Consider hiring musicians (based on allowed budget) as needed for celebration Sundays, to include Reformation, Christ the King, Advent, Christmas, mid-week Lenten services, Palm Sunday, Easter, and Pentecost. . Coordinate schedules of all musicians involved in worship. Keep record of when musicians play in worship and be prepared to submit records to the Church Administrator at month-end for compensation purposes. . Prepare music for accompanists to use in worship and rehearse with them one month prior to scheduled worship. Be prepared to provide direction to bands, ensembles and special music groups. . Communicate regularly with the Church Secretary regarding the bulletin and review the bulletin for each Sunday to create clarity, appropriate placement of service elements on the page and a product that is pleasing to the eye. Be creative with bulletin cover content, to include using congregational artists, colored paper occasionally and commercial bulletin covers for special services (as finances allow). . Review the copyright licenses purchased by St. Luke and ensure that St. Luke is following the guidelines for each of them. Keeps accurate records of all hymns and songs used in worship. Oversee that the Church Secretary is monitoring and submitting copyright reports as required. . Review the monthly calendar for accuracy in communicating choir rehearsal schedules, committee meeting times, worship format schedule, etc. Submit appropriate information, advertisements and articles for publication in the newsletter, Sunday announcement sheet and website. . Arrive early (no later than 7:30) on Sunday mornings to ensure all is prepared and in place for Sunday worship. Be present and available to the congregation when possible. Attend the modern worship service (11:00) frequently. Be prepared to stay on site until closing. . Be present and available to the congregation during the week. . Attendance is required at the weekly staff meeting on Wednesday mornings (10:00 – 11:30) and the two- day staff retreats twice a year (late Spring, early Fall).

Primary Responsibilities for Modern Worship Coordinator

. Study Biblical texts and be in communication with the Pastor to verify scripture readings and the Sermon topic. . Select worship songs to support the Biblical message for the day. . Create Keynote/Power Point presentations to communicate worship elements. Create a presentation that is creative, clear and inspires worship. Include copyright notations for each song used in worship. Create slides that also communicate announcements, upcoming events, worship times, etc. to be run prior to worship and during verbal announcements.

. Plan and review special services to include: Advent, Christmas Eve and Day, Ash Wednesday, Lenten services, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving and other celebration services.

. Attend the monthly Worship and Music Committee meeting. If there is a separate traditional worship coordinator, work with him/her prior to the meeting to coordinate information to be presented to the Committee. . Lead weekly band practice with the musicians to prepare for upcoming worships. Mentor the members of the group musically and through devotions and prayer. Facilitate relationship building between band members. Coordinate musicians’ schedules as needed. . Provide vocal and/or instrumental leadership presence in worship. . Create chord charts for various instruments and transpose songs as needed for instruments and vocal ranges. . Set up and tear down the equipment and sound system needed for the worship space. Run a sound check prior to worship. Ensure that equipment is locked up and the facility is secure after worship on Sunday and other special worship times. . Constantly be aware of new musicians and young, developing talent that might be recruited into the worship band. Create opportunities to mentor them toward involvement with the band in worship. . Meet monthly with the Altar Guild to communicate worship details that affect their preparations. . Plan and review special services to include: Advent, Christmas Eve and Day, Ash Wednesday, Lenten services, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter, Pentecost, Thanksgiving and other celebration services. . Review the monthly calendar for accuracy in communicating modern worship and praise band schedules. Communicate regularly with the Church Secretary and submit appropriate information, advertisements and articles for publication in the newsletter. . Arrive early (no later than 7:30) on Sunday mornings to ensure all is prepared and in place for Sunday worship. Be present and available to the congregation when possible. Attend the traditional worship service (8:30) frequently. Be prepared to stay on site until closing. . Be present and available to the congregation during the week. . Attendance is required at the weekly staff meeting on Wednesday mornings (10:00 – 11:30) and the two- day staff retreats twice a year (late Spring, early Fall).

Secondary (both Traditional and Modern) . Revise and improve regular worship services by using ideas from worship workshops, worship publications, other church’s worships, congregational musicians and artists, the Worship and Music Committee and original, creative thought. . Write a monthly article regarding various worship and music topics for the newsletter. (Email this to the church secretary, if possible.) . Ensure that a written thank you is sent to people providing special music, whether written by the Worship Coordinator or by enlisting the help of the Congregational Care Coordinator. Supervisory Responsibilities (both Traditional and Modern) . Oversee, communicate with and provide direction and support to the Worship Organists and Pianists, worship bands or ensembles, Chancel Choir Director, Chancel Choir Accompanist, instrumentalists, and providers of special music. . Be a member of the hiring team for musicians and be prepared to release a musician from their position if warranted.

Qualifications (both Traditional and Modern) . Must be a practicing Christian who will support the Mission, Vision and Purpose Statements of St. Luke Lutheran Church and has an appreciation for and some understanding of Lutheran doctrine. . College degree in music/sacred music would be helpful. . In lieu of a college degree, a musical background along with extensive experience leading worship as a musician or liturgist, directing musical groups such as choir, bell choir, etc. and creative worship planning could be acceptable. . Organized, effective communicator and enjoys working with people.
