I. Catalog Description:

Introduction to Web Media 1,using personal computers. Topics are Web audio recording and editing and Blogging. This is an online course. Credit/No credit. 2 Lecture/Problem solving.

Student is expected to have a basic understanding of personal computers.

. Students will use computer technology to produce Web audio blogs and podcasts. . Students will demonstrate their understanding of Web audio production by producing a simple podcast and hosting it on the Internet. . Students will develop and demonstrate an understanding of what elements go into a successful podcast and blog.

Students must own or have access to:  A microphone. (this can be purchased for about $10 from any computer store.)  Internet connection – students will be required to download free software for this course. Students will also upload assignments.

VII. Expanded Description of the Course and Instructional Methods:

A. Expanded Description of the Course: This is an online, skills course, offered for credit/no-credit. Students will learn the use of audio on the Web and a basic background of why a person might want to use audio and what makes it appropriate. The course will be delivered with Breeze and Contribute lectures. Students will work independently.

During week 1 on the class, students will learn to use Blackboard to take the course and get an introduction to audio on the Web.1 Student products for this class will be original work only, so it is important during the first week to introduce them to copyright and ethical issues.

During week 2, students will learn about equipment and applications necessary to record and edit their voice on the Internet. They will use a microphone and simple sound editing software to create a short audio commercial. The will also learn about free sound libraries, sound formats and sound compression.

During week 3, students will learn about podcasting and program related to recording, producing and broadcasting podcasts. Students will begin storyboarding a podcast that will be their project for the end of the course. Students will learn to host their podcast on iTunes. Students will take a multiple choice quiz to show their understanding of course concepts.

2 During week 4 students will be introduced to Blogging. They will create a simple, week long blog on the Web using free Blog hosting software.

During week 5, students will reflect about blogs and learn different context areas for blogs. Students will also integrate audio and blogging by creating an audio blog.

As a demonstration of what the students have learned in this course, they will take another quiz and they will create a 10 minute podcast for the class to listen to.
