Birding in Boulder (UT) Workshop June 11th,12th, & 13th, 2010

Join us for a weekend of birding in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Learn basic bird identification techniques and observe and identify birds from the forests and lakes of the Aquarius Plateau to the soaring sandstone cliffs and riparian areas of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

Part I: ($25) Friday, 2:00 pm. Meet at the Boulder Town Hall to learn about basic birding equipment and techniques that will allow you to identify birds more effectively. You will receive a Birding Journal as part of this presentation. This part also includes a walking tour around the fields of Boulder to practice newly learned techniques.

Part II: ($25) Friday, 6:00 pm. Spend a leisurely evening with your hosts along Boulder Creek identifying birds, eating a great Dutch oven dinner, and getting to know other birding participants.

Part III: ($75) Saturday, 7:30 am. Participate in a full day field trip beginning with a morning birding experience in Calf Creek Canyon, and spending the afternoon in the high mountain forests and meadows at Posey and Cyclone Lakes. Continental breakfast and box lunch are provided. Dinner is on your own.

Part IV: ($50) Sunday, 7:30 am. Participate in a half day field trip in search of Acorn Woodpeckers and a hike from Kings Pasture Reservoir up the east fork of Boulder Creek. Continental breakfast and box lunch are provided.

Location Boulder, Utah is located 250 miles south of Salt Lake City (4 1/2 hours) or 150 miles (3 hours) east of Cedar City. It is the heart of the Grand Staircase National Monument on Scenic By-way - Highway 12. It is 88 miles (2 hours) west of Bryce Canyon National Park and is just over the mountain from Capitol Reef National Park. It is a very remote community with a population of 180 residents. Lodge 800-556-3446 (435) 335-7460 The mountain and canyons are full of great camping spots, if you would prefer to camp in a campground, there are campsites at Deer Creek and Calf Creek. You can contact the BLM to make reservations for one of these campsites.

Things to Bring Binoculars, Field Guide(s), sunscreen, hat, day pack, water bottles, hiking shoes, camera, alarm clock (we start early).

Miscellaneous The workshop is contingent on a minimum of 10 applicants. The workshop will be capped at 25 participants. All applications must be postmarked by June 1, 2010. If workshop is cancelled due to low enrollment, you will be notified at least one week before the workshop date.

Instructor Steve Cox began his career as a field biologist in the Great Basin desert. He taught for 25 years at the secondary and post secondary levels most recently as professor of Ornithology at Dixie State College. He taught the Boulder Birding Workshop at the Boulder Heritage Festival in July of 2008 and has been a field trip leader for the St. George Winter Birding Festival. He received his B.S Degree in Zoology from Southern Utah University and his M.S. Degree in Ecology from the University of Nevada at Reno. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, the National Association of Biology Teachers Outstanding Biology Teacher Awards, and the Christa McAuliffe Award. He currently lives in Boulder watching birds year-round. Boulder Heritage Foundation Assumption of Risk, Release of Liability & Indemnification Agreement

I am fully aware that while participating in the course listed above and related activities which are offered by the Boulder Heritage Foundation (BHF) through its employees, instructors, board members and/or agents, there are risks and dangers which may be present due to various hazards. These hazards include, but are not limited to, narrow and steep trails, rough terrain, high altitude, desert heat, wild animals, toxic plants, illness and/or injury in remote areas lacking access to medical facilities, natural forces, acts of God, rough water, flash floods, cold water, horseback or mule riding, pack animals, and travel by boat, automobile, van, bus, air, or other conveyances. My participation in the BHF course or related activities is entirely voluntary. I am fully aware of the hazards described or referred to herein, as well as the fact that other unforeseeable hazards may also exist.

II. I understand that the risk of injury or death may be minimized if I follow proper safety procedures. BHF instructors will instruct participants on safety procedures at the start of and during the course or other related activities. The possibility of injury or death should be minimized if all participants are attentive to what is occurring around them and follow the recommended safety procedures. While risk of injury or death may be minimized, it can never be completely eliminated.

III. In consideration of my right to participate in this course and related activities, I hereby release, waive and discharge BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents from any and all loss or damage, and claims for damages resulting therefrom, on account of any injury to my person or property, including injury resulting n death, whether caused by negligence of BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents or otherwise, which may arise in connection with my participation in the course or related activities.

IV. I hereby assume full responsibility for the risk of bodily injury, death, or property damage and/or loss due to the negligence of BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents or otherwise, which may arise in connection with my participation in the course or related activities.

V. I hereby agree to indemnify, hold forever harmless and defend BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents against loss from any and all lawsuits, actions, and/or claims of any character, type or description, whether at law or in equity, brought or made for or on account of any injuries or damages received or sustained by me, and agree to hold BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents harmless from all persons, firms, or corporations who should bring lawsuit or make claims against BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents because of such injury or damages arising out of, attributed to, directly, or indirectly, or occasioned by the negligent acts of any person, corporation, or other entity, including the negligent acts of any person, corporation, other entity, including the negligent acts of BHF, its employees, instructors, board members, and/or agents which may occur during my participation in the course identified herein or related activities. This indemnity and Hold Harmless Agreement includes claims for contribution and indemnity for hospital expenses, drug expenses, doctor fees, nursing, therapy or convalescent fees, and/or attorney’s fees and/or claims made by or on behalf of the United States of America or any state or political subdivision hereof.

VI. I am hereby informed that BHF strongly recommends the purchase by me of health insurance and/or accident insurance from a company selected by me which covers any injury and/or illness occasioned by me while participating in the course described above or other related activities.

VII. I affirm that my general health is good and that I am not under a doctor’s care for any condition that might endanger my health or the health of other participates. In case of injury, illness, death, I or my estate will bear the full cost of any evacuation procedures utilizing an ambulance, helicopter, raft, rescue team, any type of rescue procedure and any type of related medical care. I affirm that I have been advised to carry adequate and applicable health and/or accident insurance which will cover the cost of reasonable and appropriate health care for any injury or illness I may experience while participating in the course identified herein or other related activities.

VIII. I hereby consent that any photographs and/or films and/or videotapes in which I appear may be used without compensation to me for the purposes of publicity or advertising, such as catalogues, flyers, magazine articles, news stories and other written and electronic forms of publicity.

IX. I understand that I will not be permitted to participate in any BHF course or other related activity unless and until this agreement is properly executed.

X. I expressly agree that this Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnification Agreement is intended to be as broad and inclusive as permitted by the laws of the United States of America and the State of Utah, and that if any portion of it is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding continue in full legal force and effect.

XI. I have carefully read this Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnification Agreement, and voluntarily sign the same. By signing this agreement, I acknowledge that it shall be effective and binding upon me, my family, heirs, next of kin, administrators, executors, representatives, and my estate.

XII.
