Steve O’Ban (Prefers Republican Party)

Elected Experience: State Senator. Chair, Human Services and Corrections. Vice Chair, Law and Justice. Serves on Committees for Veterans’ and Military Affairs, Transportation, and Sexually Exploited Children. Former State Representative, Assistant Floor Leader.

Other Professional Experience: Steve helps small businesses and nonprofits; defended 8,000 Washington educators in the U.S. Supreme Court when money was taken illegally from their paychecks and used for politics.

Education: University of Washington, Seattle University Law School.

Community Service: Serves on Rescue Mission board; volunteers at a legal clinic for the homeless; leads a ministry providing refurbished housing, meals, and tutoring for children on the Yakama Indian Reservation. Wife, Laurie, teaches at TCC.

Statement: “I grew up delivering newspapers on my bike in UP and Fircrest, raised by a single mom who taught kindergarten. I coached my sons’ baseball teams. One son attended West Point and both serve proudly at JBLM. We’ve made this community our life-long home.”

In his first term, Steve O’Ban is getting results for our community and crossing party lines to do it. He joined a bipartisan coalition to pass a no-new-taxes budget that adds $1 billion to schools. The News Tribune recognized him for “leading a bipartisan coalition” to improve UW Tacoma.

He is helping small businesses create new jobs and authored legislation giving veterans college credit for military training. Senator O’Ban wrote new accountability measures to reform the state’s troubled transportation agency and is working to eliminate traffic problems at JBLM. O’Ban advocates for improved breast cancer screening and authored a new law giving orphaned foster kids their own legal voice to help them find permanent, loving homes.
