JOURNAL of ALBERTA POSTAL HISTORY Issue JOURNAL OF ALBERTA POSTAL HISTORY Issue #11 Edited by Dale Speirs, Box 6830, Calgary, Alberta T2P 2E7, or [email protected] Published November 2016 CHECKLIST OF ALBERTA POSTAL HISTORIES compiled by Dale Speirs When I first began considering writing the postal history of Alberta, I did a literature search and found next to nothing. Much of what passes for postal history for any area is not. The following are not genuine postal history: 1) Checklists of postmarks. I collect postmarks myself but by themselves they are artifacts, not the actual history of a post office. 2) “Here is a cover” stories. Interesting, but only vignettes. 3) Social histories of towns illustrated by some covers or stamps. This is the most common type of pseudo-postal history. Long detailed accounts of a settlement but only a paragraph or two about the post office or the people who ran them. I recently ran into a problem with writing Alberta postal history, that of duplication by others. The May 2016 forest fire which caused the evacuation of Fort McMurray in the Athabasca Tar Sands prompted me to spend several weeks writing a postal history of the area. You can imagine my dismay when I opened the Sep/Oct 2016 issue of CANADIAN PHILATELIST and discovered that David Piercey had beaten me into print on the subject. A fine article, and I hold no grudge. It’s just one of those things. As a result, this issue of JAPH has a checklist of postal history articles of Alberta already published, the genuine kind, not here-is-a-cover stories, to help others avoid duplication. I would also like to encourage others to let me know what they are working on so as to avoid duplication. Alberta has had over 4,000 post offices and retail postal outlets, so there should be plenty of room for all. For the most part, I have been concentrating on Alberta south of a line from Rocky Mountain House to Red Deer to Stettler and east to the Saskatchewan border. I have completed the area west of Highway 2 from Olds to the American border, the Mormon diaspora of southwestern Alberta, bits and pieces south of the Trans-Canada Highway, the Red Deer River badlands, and parts of the Eckville-Red Deer-Blackfalds area. I haven’t any plans to do the districts north of Highway 11 or the boreal forest. If someone wants to stake a claim to, for example, the Peace River district, Edmonton, etcetera, I have no problem with that. The objective of the study is to compile existing groundwater information to paint a picture of what is currently known and to set the stage for what needs to be done in the near future. Recommendations are included in this report that will assist in understanding the resource and managing it for long term sustainable use. The OWC released Priorities for the Oldman Watershed: Promoting action to maintain and improve our watershed in January 2012 which outlines eight goals including one for groundwater. The OWC is developing an Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the Oldman River basin which will achieve the eight goals in the Priorities document. Goal five is “understand groundwater and how it interacts with surface water” which is followed by three objectives including one that states “research the availability and quality of groundwater and its interaction with surface water”. This study is a step towards meeting that objective.

The monthly rise was not enough to offset previous declines and year-to-date sales remain nine per cent below last year’s levels. Weakness in sales does not come as a surprise as the southern district SALES has also struggled with job loss since COVID-19. The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat areas have seen over 15,000 jobs lost over the past three months as unemployment rates rose to nine per cent. The drop in sales was met with adjustments in the new listings which on a year to date basis have declined 192 by nearly 18 per cent. This has helped keep inventory levels lower than levels recorded last year. Improving sales and lower inventories contributed to the downward trend in the months of supply which fell to below four months. Months of supply is tighter than levels recorded both before COVID-19 and last year’s levels. If they continue to stay in this range, we could start to see a more significant impact on price.
