With the conference victory, the “Eagles” 31 made a third straight trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament 32 as the Big South Conference’s automatic bid recipient; and 33 34 Whereas, Winthrop has averaged twenty wins over the past three 35 years and has compiled a home record of thirty-six wins and three 36 losses over the same three year period. The “Eagles” have 37 extended their consecutive homecourt conference game-winning 38 streak to twenty-one straight games. That is the second longest 39 streak in the nation for NCAA Division I schools; and 40 41 Whereas, the members of this outstanding basketball team include: 42 Tywan Harris, Bryant Latimer, Derrick Knox, Pierre Wooten,

1 [4007] 1 1 Tyrone Myers, Anthony Moore, Greg Lewis, Tyrone Walker, Josh 2 Grant, Tommy Johnson, Alasanne Bakayoko, Eyo Effiong, Gabe 3 Leventis, and Marcus Stewart; and 4 5 Whereas, Head Coach Gregg Marshall, along with Associate Head 6 Coach Jeff Meyer, and Assistant Coaches Shaun Golden and 7 Damon Stephenson have all worked very hard in season and out of 8 season to reach such a high standard of athletic achievement that 9 has not been matched by any other conference foe; and 10 11 Whereas, in a game which is dependent upon teamwork, several 12 individuals were recognized for their outstanding contributions to 13 the team’s success. Two players, Marcus Stewart and Derrick 14 Knox, were voted to the 2001 Big South All-Conference first and 15 second teams, respectively. Also, Tyrone Walker was voted 2001 16 Big South Conference Rookie of the Year; and 17 18 Whereas, the Winthrop University Men’s Basketball Team has 19 performed at a level which very few teams can attain, the General 20 Assembly of the State of South Carolina is pleased to pause in its 21 deliberations and recognize the grand accomplishments of this 22 team and the pride that it has bestowed upon the fine University 23 that it represents. Now, therefore, 24 25 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 26 concurring: 27 28 That the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this 29 resolution, expresses their hearty congratulations to the 2000-2001 30 Men’s Basketball Team at Winthrop University for an outstanding 31 season and continued excellence over the past three basketball 32 seasons and to recognize the Winthrop “Eagles” return to the 33 National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Championship 34 Tournament. 35 36 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 37 Head Coach Gregg Marshall on behalf of Winthrop University that 38 his team represents so well. 39 ----XX----
