SOUTH EAST BRANCH ACT for Teens Presented by Dr Em Perera Friday 4th May 2018

Times: 9.30am to 4.30pm (Registration from 9.00am) Venue: St Julians Club, Rumshott Estate Ltd., St Julians, Sevenoaks, Kent, TN15 0RX

About the workshop

This will be a day of experiential learning aimed at CBT therapists who work with teenagers.

Adolescence can be testing time for teenagers, their parents, carers and teachers. Teenagers are making physiological, academic and emotional transitions that generate intensely strong, often conflicting, emotions and behaviours. Navigating this time can be challenging. This course aims to bring understanding and skills to help with this challenge.

By the end of the day, we hope that you will better understand:

 The unique physiological, psychological and social factors effecting teenagers  ACT and why it works well with young people  Our mind and how it creates problems as well as solutions  How to manage our own feelings when communicating with teens  How to gain objectivity over our thoughts, feelings and reactions  How to identify values to guide our choices and actions

About the presenter

Dr Em Perera has worked as a secondary school teacher and an international organisational development consultant before training as a clinical psychologist at Salomons, Canterbury Christchurch University (CCCU). Her 19 years of work experience includes 13 years living and working in Antigua, Uganda, Nepal, Nigeria and Glasgow.

Since 2013, Em has been using ACT with adolescents, adults and couples in her clinical practice. The growth in childhood anxiety, depression, self-harm and risky behaviours is a worrying trend. She hopes that courses like this will help to ‘nip these problems in the bud’, by teaching skills for psychological flexibility and pro-social living. This is the passion that led to creating Enhance Living (www.enhanceliving.org).

Dr Perera lives in Tonbridge with her husband and daughter. She works at the Ananda Clinic in Tonbridge and The Priory Hospital, Ticehurst. She also provides sessional teaching at CCCU, Surrey University and the University of Glasgow.

Event Information Price includes lunch and refreshments. A CPD certificate will be provided for 6 hours CPD.
