WORKING ENVIRONMENT The Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building's mission is to provide an environment that inspires innovation, intellectual rigour, social responsibility and professional consciousness/readiness in its staff and graduates. Fundamental to this mission is that the Faculty provides leadership, and actively engages with the professions and industry groups of its disciplines, through its research, collaborative projects and continuing intellectual exchange.

The Faculty is a major contributor to professional education, maintains strong links with professional bodies, and has a high profile fostered by several disciplines through exhibition activities and achievement in external competitions. Undergraduate courses are in considerable demand and well regarded; the high intake of first preference students ensures well-motivated student groups. Faculty administrative and technical staff are committed to support the academic programs through the provision of essential services and high levels of technical expertise. The Faculty is aiming to raise its research profile and to develop a very high level of interaction with the professions, industries and cultural institutions within the city of Sydney (CBD) and its immediate environs. DAB aims to be regarded as a key site of intellectual exchange within the city of Sydney.

The Faculty is undertaking significant expansion of its research activities, with the creation of two new research units: CDD and DATUM. The Centre for Digital Design (CDD) focuses on the study and development of dynamic immersive information systems and creative use of digital media and aims to develop new and innovative ways to design environments within the physical and virtual realms. The Centre for Design Through Understanding and Making (DATUM) is exploring synergies and conflicts between the practice of designing and the practice of research. The Digital Workshop will provide technical support to the researchers of these two centres.

The Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building (DAB) offers eight undergraduate degree programs and sixteen postgraduate programs in design, architecture, construction and property studies. Facilities include advanced laboratories, workshops, studios and resource centres. The facilities support project based and self-directed learning in a production environment and creative research. A major goal of the Faculty’s teaching programs is to produce graduates who are technically literate and who can enter their professions as conscious and reflective designers.
