Description of Charity

New Choices for Youth is an innovative charity, running community projects for the evolving needs of young people.

Established in Newham, NCY’s experience of working with vulnerable young people, their families in the community during challenging transitional periods spans many decades. This gives us the skills and know-how find solutions that work.

NCY’s staff and volunteers believe nothing is impossible and work to address issues associated with inner city deprivation that affect children and young people. Our services support young people in developing confidence and skills to find solutions that are right for them by reducing the barriers they face.

Expectation for the role

We are seeking to recruit committed people to serve on the Management Committee of New Choices for Youth Trust, in a voluntary capacity. We are a growing, youth focussed, organisation constituted as a charitable company.

New Choices for Youth Trust (NCY) was established in 1985 as a community based response to custodial sentences for young offenders and has developed a range of support initiatives for vulnerable young people, youth work provision and participation and training opportunities.

The NCY Trust is a registered charity and limited company.

NCY MISSION is:

To inspire, inform and improve the life choices for Young people (Your call is to help us help young people reach their full potential)

Our aims are to:

To work in partnership with young people and their families, other agencies and partners to ensure:

 that young people are given the support, training and opportunities to gain skills to shape and influence policies and services that affect their development and environment  that issues affecting young people are highlighted and addressed  that young people’s achievements are acknowledged and celebrated in order to raise their aspirations and inspire them and others to achieve more. Objectives:

To develop and deliver services that are engaging and innovative that will:

 Support young people to increase their self confidence and self esteem  To provide opportunities to support young people to develop positive attitudes towards others and respect for self  To enable young people to build their resilience in order to cope with life’s challenges  Provide support and facilities for education, information, training and social gatherings  To create opportunities for young people to achieve and develop on a personal and skills basis  Support young people to make informed choices  To ensure NCY’s engagement with partners and policy makers in order to influence policy and the development of services for young people

Members will be expected to make a commitment to prepare for and attend Committee meetings which are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm six times per year.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COMMITTEE:

 Appoint and manage the Chief Executive of NCY;

 Make strategic and major decisions relating to the Trusts objectives, policies and procedures and monitor them to ensure an effective organisation;  Review and updating of Strategic Plans Monitor and oversee the management of the NCY’s work:

 Communication and consultation with all sectors of the community to ensure that the needs and interests of relevant people and bodies are taken into account when making decisions.  Ensuring adequate resources for effective delivery of the organisation’s activities.  Identifying and securing resources.  Promoting the work of the Trust, its needs, opportunities and progress, and issues affecting its client groups.  Arrange and participate in Annual General Meeting and annual team day;  Support and participate in sub-groups;  Represent the interests and purpose of New Choices for Youth to the local community, local authority and central government and other organisations;  Participate in other activities as may be required, including attending meetings, training and social events.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

In order to ensure that the Committee operates as a creative and effective team, the Committee needs to encompass a variety of skills, experiences and personal attributes and ensure that it continues to represent and relate to its community and reflect its diversity.

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCES:

We are looking for trustee and member of the committee who can bring extensive knowledge/experience in finance to act as our treasurer.

 Desire to inspire, inform and improve the life choices for all young people  Ability to work with and relate to people of various ages; cultures; backgrounds and experiences  A positive approach to equality of opportunity  Commitment to open and inclusive methods of working  Communication skills and ability to communicate in English  Interest in Social Policy, crime and social care issues  Desire to work as part of a team  Knowledge/understanding of community and voluntary groups  Flexibility to attend evening and occasional day-time meetings
