Topic/Learning Target Homework from last lesson - Reading of a newspaper article with 4th grade students - Ss read and understand a non-simplified newspaper article - Ss learn new vocab. - Ss learn expressions used in a discussion/debate Lesson 1 Content Material Method Time/Notes Before reading the article in class, T collects information about Hogwarts, e.g. CW /IW 5 ‘ the 4 houses, the broomstick flying blackboard lessons, the magic classes etc.
T asks Ss what you could do in a normal school blackboard CW 5’ Ss answers: e.g. students disguise themselves, wear "magic" hats, learn some easy tricks etc.
T lets the students vote if such a school CW 2’ exists in reality > it actually does in GB!
T hands out newspaper article. Each newspaper articles paragraph is read aloud by a student (12 CW 15’ in total). after each paragraph, the T writes OHP difficult words on the transparency and asks if the Ss knew the vocabulary (Use different ways of explaining vocab.: mime, explain, ask Ss etc.) 3’ T explains that he wants to train Ss for a TV debate about the introduction of a “Hogwarts-like” school in Switzerland.
T hands out an overview of expressions worksheets (overview of used in discussions/debates (E.g. In my discussion expressions) opinion, …/ I see your point, but…./I don’t think you’re right, because …) PW 8’ Ss translate some of the expressions into German. CW 2’ correct in class.
T then divides class into four groups, two are pro “Harry Potter Schools” and two are against. GW 10’
Ss have to think of arguments for and against this kind of school and use the expressions from the overview. Lesson 2 Content Material Method Time/Notes TV-Debate Ev. OHP, blackboard. DI 10’ x 2 (> two discussions) Two groups are facing each other and 2 speaker desks in the discuss. T acts as talk master and the front of the room remaining two groups are the audience. chairs for the audience in the back of the room.
Ss in the audience are journalists. They 5’ have to take notes what the two parties are suggesting.
After the two discussions, the journalists 15’ (resp. all Ss) have to write their own article about the TV-debate. They have to include at least two arguments in favour of Harry Potter Schools and two arguments against such schools (max 200-300 words) and hand in their articles at the end of the lesson.
Notes on program for next lesson Homework for next lesson: - T corrects articles and > talk about - search the internet for a short article in English frequent mistakes etc.
