Dear Ms. Howe:

I am writing at the suggestion of Frank Albertson, one of your staff members and a close friend of mine from Marquette University. I am currently a third-year student at the University of Wisconsin Law School and am seeking a position as a public defender. I have always intended to return to Los Angeles to practice after the broadening experience of attending law school in another part of the country.

I have a strong background and interest in both criminal law and assisting the disadvantaged. After graduating from UCLA, I worked for the Wisconsin Department of Social Services’ Office of Policy and Planning, where my primary responsibilities centered around the development of innovative programs for “hard to place” children in foster care. This work was so compelling that during the summer of 2008, I chose to clerk for the General Counsel of DSS. Last summer, I was a legal intern for the Child Abuse Unit at the Office of the District Attorney for Dane County, Wisconsin, and was thrilled to have a part in protecting the well-being of children and families. To further demonstrate my commitment to this field, I have taken advanced coursework in Criminal Justice Administration and Litigation in Criminal Cases.
