Chlorogalum Pomeridianum
Chlorogalum pomeridianum Puspa Ghimire Hort 5051 Scientific name: Chlorogalum pomeridianum Family: Liliaceae 5 known species of the Genus: C.parviflorum, C. grandiflorum, C. Purpureum, C. aungustifolium, and C. pomeridianum. No synonyms. Many common names: soap plant, amole plant, Indian soap root, Indian soap plant, soap lily etc. Mediterranean climates of southwest corner of Oregon and in southern California 37-42 degree North latitude Dry open hills and plains below 1500m altitude ponderosa shrub forest Oregon oak woods California oakwoods Chaparral Montane chaparral coastal sagebrush and California steppe. • Bulbs are 7-15 cm long. • Bulbs are covered with thick coat of tough fibers. Each bulb weighs from 20-350 grams. Chlorogalum pomeridianum plant sprouting from its bulb in February. Leaves are linear and all the Leaves arise from the underground bulb in early winter. It does not have visual stem. Panicle arises from the middle of leaves in early June. This new species is characterized by the leaves bearing heterogeneous circular to elongate pustules and the strongly reflexed perigone seg- ments at anthesis. It is at first sight related to Massonia jasminiflora Burch. ex Baker, M. wittebergensis U.Müll.-Doblies & D.Müll.-Doblies and M. saniensis Wetschnig, Mart.-Azorín & M.Pinter, but differs in vegetative and floral characters, as well as in its allopatric distribution. A complete morphological description of the new species and data on biology, habitat, and distribution are presented. Chlorogaloideae) comprises more than one lineage. A recently published study indicated that Chlorogalum is paraphyletic, with two well-supported clades that are successive sister groups to the remainder of the Chlorogaloideae. The first is composed of three vespertine-flowering species (Chlorogalum sensu stricto), and the second comprises two diurnally flowering species. Additional morphological and cytological evidence independently support recognition of two lineages. Hooveria , gen. nov. , is proposed to accommodate the diurnally flowering species of the second lineage. Three taxa are transferred from Chlorogalum to the new genus: Hooveria parviflora (S. Wats.) D.W. Taylor & D.J. Keil, comb. nov. , H. purpurea (Brandeg.) D.W. Taylor & D.J. Keil, comb. nov. , and H. purpurea var. reducta (Hoover) D.W. Taylor & D.J. Keil, comb. nov. A neotype is designated for Chlorogalum parviflorum S. Wats. Chlorogalum Kunth (Agavaceae subf. Chlorogaloideae) as treated traditionally is a genus of five species with nine terminal taxa (Jernstedt 2002; Callahan 2015a, b; Table 1). Chlorogalum is endemic to the California Floristic Province, extending from its northern limit in southern Coos County, Oregon (Callahan 2015b), southward to extreme northwestern Baja California (Rebman et al. -

EPPO, 2013 Mini data sheet on Asparagus asparagoides (Asparagaceae) Added in 2012 – Deleted in 2013 Reasons for deletion: Asparagus asparagoides was added to the EPPO Alert List in 2012 but as no immediate risk was perceived, it was transferred to the Observation List in 2013. Why Asparagus asparagoides (Asparagaceae) is a rhizomatous perennial climbing vine originating from South Africa. One of its English common names is “bridal creeper”. This species is invasive in Australia. It is used as an ornamental plant in the EPPO region, and is listed as an invasive alien plant in Spain, but is also present in other EPPO member countries. Considering the invasive behavior of this species elsewhere in the world as well as in EPPO countries, it is considered that Mediterranean and Macaronesian countries may be at risk, and that the species should usefully be monitored. Geographical distribution EPPO region: France (including Corse), Italy (Sicilia), Malta, Morocco, Portugal (Azores, Madeira), Spain (including Islas Canarias), Tunisia. Note: The species had erroneously been indicated as present in Slovenia (from an incorrect interpretation of Jogan, 2005). Africa (native): Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe. North America: Mexico, USA (California, Hawaii (East Maui)). South and Central America: Argentina, Guatemala, Uruguay. Oceania (invasive): Australia (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, Western Australia), New Zealand. Morphology A. asparagoides is a geophyte with a perennial cylindrical, slender (about 5 mm wide), branching rhizome, growing parallel to the soil surface, bearing fleshy tubers (25–42 mm long and 8–20 mm wide). It produces thin shoots, slightly woody at the base and up to 6 m long when support is available. -

(Asparagaceae: Nolinoideae – formerly also placed in Convallariaceae and in Ruscaceae) ranges from Assam (India) in the west to southern Japan in the east, and from central China southwards to the Malay Peninsula. Its centre of diversity is in southeast China (Guangxi Province) and adjacent northern Vietnam (Tillich, 2005). The number of known species continues to grow as the Indochinese floristic region is better explored. Currently more than 100 species are recognised (Tillich & Averyanov, 2012) of which many were first reported from Vietnam only in the last decade (Bogner & Arnautov, 2004; Bräuchler & Ngoc, 2005; Tillich, 2005, 2006, 2008; Tillich et al., 2007; Tillich & Averyanov, 2008, 2012; Averyanov & Tillich, 2012, 2013, submitted; Tillich & Leong-Škorničková, 2013; Vislobokov et al., 2013). -

We thank our customers for their continued business and offer them this 2011 catalog with many exciting new plants, but no overall price increases. We also remain committed to the fact that water remains a precious and limited commodity. To this end we continue to expand our line of water conserving succulents and plants from mediterranean climates, including many from our own California flora. This catalog has 145 new plants, which are all listed at the back of this catalog and are accompanied within the catalog body with a star ( ). Of these new plants, 56 are succulents, bringing the total number of succulents we now grow to 379, and 29 are California native plants, bringing our total of native plants to 156. We also are proud to offer 9 new plants from the UC Santa Cruz Koala Blooms Australian Native Plant program and so now are growing 29 great plants from this program and bringing to 190 the total number of different Australian plants that we currently grow. -

Ms.", but never validly published. We here describe Austronea patersoniae to include plants showing bulbs with loose scales; 5-9 narrowly linear erect leaves with papillate margins; elongate pe duncle; lowermost bracts with a broad, flat, papery spur and reddish flowers with papillate filaments. We provide a complete morphological description as well as data on ecology and distribution.
