Although Lebron James is considered to be the greatest basketball player in the world today, no one will ever eclipse Michael Jordan’s status as the greatest player in impact, prestige, and championships. As Lebron James celebrity status is reflected in a world market based on sales of his jersey in China, Spain, and other countries, it was Michael Jordan’s ad campaign in the 1980’s and 90’s that became the driving force behind the rise of the NBA. Slogans such as “like Mike” and “Air Jordan” became common phrases in America during the commercialization of the sport. Another area Jordan outshines LeBron is the area of prestige. Jordan jerseys still sell out across the States and Asia, although Jordan retired more than ten years ago. More basketball fans considered Jordan to be a more dominate player today than LeBron. Finally, probably the area that is most important to prove the supremacy of Michael Jordan’s place as the greatest basketball player of all time is titles. Within a 9 year span, Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to 6 NBA titles, and this was during a brief retirement in which he took a year off to pursue professional baseball. Michael Jordan was a great defensive player, not just scoring leader, who transcended the game and paved the road for other players after him.
