Notes to Teacher for Representing Prompt:

 If a teacher has a multi-grade classroom, the student’s role may change. For example, the prompt may read “In your role as a grade 7 student…for your peers” (in this case, grade 7 peers).

 Depending on the representational format chosen, the student may take more time than the suggested 3 to 5 minutes. Speaking Prompt

As a grade 6 student, your task is to create and deliver a three- to five-minute oral presentation that demonstrates your understanding of the importance of being a peacemaker. At a school assembly, you will persuade the student body that each and every person has a role and responsibility to play in being a peacemaker within the school, and that each person can have an impact beyond the school walls (home, community, world). Use your knowledge of how being a peacemaker can have tremendous impact and connect it to the present and the future.

You may use any of the following formats: formal speech, oral report, video with you as the “journalist”, monologue, Reader’s theatre, Power Point presentation, Photo Story, or other spoken form (with teacher approval).

Role: Grade 6 student

Audience: Teachers, staff members, and the entire student body.

Format: Oral presentation

Topic: Persuade your peers and teachers that it is everybody’s responsibility in the school to be peacemakers in the school and beyond.

Strong Verb: Persuade

Social Responsibility and Efficacy are addressed in this prompt.

Notes to Teacher for Speaking Prompt:

 If students choose Power Point or Photo Story, they must include a voice over or provide a spoken commentary. In this task, the spoken aspects of the presentation are the most significant.

 Teachers must make clear that students will not present their oral presentation to a student assembly. The goal, however, in identifying the audience is to guide students to select language appropriate to their purpose and audience as the students craft their presentation.

 Based on the student population of the particular student’s school, the student may select a specific grade as his/her audience. For example, if the student decides to prepare the presentation for a middle years’ school, that audience informs the student’s language choices as well as style, or if the student elects to address a grades 1-8 school, he/she must use language and presentation style appropriate to that audience and the student’s purpose. Writing Prompt

You are a grade 6 student. You are applying for a position as a peer mediator at your school. Write a cover letter and resume or write a proposal (a proposal could be in the form of a flyer, brochure, pamphlet, etc.). In your written composition, convince your school team (principal, teacher liaison, school counsellor) to select you as a member of the mediation team that will foster and facilitate peaceful resolutions of conflicts and disputes within your school. Identify and explain the mediation skills and strategies that you possess.

Role: Grade 6 student who wants to be the school’s peer mediator

Notes to Teacher for Writing Prompt:

 Teachers will need to explain and explore the role of a peer mediator. Peer mediators facilitate disputes between two people or small groups. Peer mediation allows the students to understand ways to resolve conflict.

 Teacher must be sure to explain that a flyer, brochure, or pamphlet must include predominantly written text for this particular prompt/task.
