Focusing on ornament that evokes the weave patterns of Byzantine and Islamic silk in tenth and eleventh century manuscripts from Echternach, Einsiedeln, Reichenau, and elsewhere, this study argues that—in specific contexts—ornament has meaning and serves functions that go beyond mere decoration. The dissertation contextualizes so-called textile pages in the codicological and iconographic structure of the manuscripts in which they appear and examines them in light of exegetical texts that discuss the function and metaphoric meaning of matter in religious art. After the first chapter clarifies the formal relationship between medieval textiles and textile ornament, the subsequent chapters bring the ornamental images together with various textile metaphors. From such a reading of textile iconography emerge three major strands of meaning: the notion of scripture as a veil of revelation, the Incarnation as a symbolic garment, and textile-ornamented manuscripts as the corporeal book-bodies of scripture. In addition to an investigation of the allegorical meaning of textile ornament, a discussion of the function of physical matter in private meditation and the ii liturgy opens new perspectives on the utility and necessity of physical props for contemplative and liturgical purposes in medieval worship. -

MESA R o MES 54 1 2020 raises the question of how blackness – either abstractly or in reference to actual Black people – fits into how her respondents understand themselves as racialized subjects. Forever Suspect also raises broader questions about citizenship and belonging. Is it possible to imagine an American society, or any society, without racialized citizenship? While reading I was struck by those respondents, mostly women, who expressed optimism and hope that through their own behavior they will shape others’ views of Muslims. They believe that positive change can still be effected amidst the heightened Islamophobia pervading the United States, buttressed by the words and actions of the U.S. president. One wonders how far our systems of racialized surveillance will go before we might all act in opposition. That such questions arose while reading this book speaks to its richness. Forever Suspect will remain relevant for how it challenges us as social scientists and other scholars who research Muslim Americans in new ways. In addition to its scholarly depth, it is a beautifully written ethnography that will appeal to both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as scholars in Sociology, Race and Ethnicity, and Islamophobia, among other disciplines. Michel, 11 – 15121 Alessandria, Italy (Received 1 November 2015) Abstract The manuscript of Edessa or ms. 3290, a XVIII century Armenian manuscript kept at Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna, has been thoroughly studied from the religious, artistic, historical and diagnostic point of view. Non-invasive measurements on the miniatures have been carried out in situ with portable instruments in order to evaluate the pictorial materials used to decorate this beautiful codex, lavishly illuminated with full- page miniatures. The results of the diagnostic study suggested that at least three different painters, each one with its own characteristic palette, contributed to the illumination of the manuscript. Precious colorants were employed for painting, among which of particular interest is the combined use of ultramarine blue and gold, considered the most valuable pictorial materials available to painters. Such a study could be a starting point for a larger research on the heritage of Armenian manuscripts held in Italian institutions. Byzantine Art and Architecture Thesis The development of early Christian religion had a significant impact on western art after the fall of the Roman Empire in the 4th century (AD). Through examining various works of art and architecture, it becomes evident that the period of Byzantium marked a significant transition in aesthetic conventions which had a previous focus on Roman elements. As this research entails, the period of Byzantium acted as a link between the periods of Antiquity and the Middle Ages and thus provides insight on the impact of Christianity and its prevalence in art and architecture during this vast historical period. For the few Armenians then resident in Italy this co- incidence of circumstances constituted a mobilising factor: being in many cases citizens of the Ottoman Empire, on the one hand, they had to demonstrate their diversity with respect to the Turks, and on the other hand, the assumption of active behaviour towards the host country aimed at enhancing their belonging and cultural prerogatives. With the aim to investigate how the Genocide was experienced by the Armenian community in Italy, the paper will focus on the magazine Armenia. Eco delle rivendicazioni armene (Armenia. 258 CHAPTER 6 Anglo-Saxon Sculpture and Rome: Perspectives and Interpretations Having seen the many and varied ways in which early Christian Anglo-Saxon architecture could articulate ideas of 'Rome', this chapter will turn to review the other public art form of the Anglo-Saxon landscape, the stone sculpture, to consider also its relationship with concepts of ‘Romanness’. This is an aspect that has emerged – more or less tangentially – from other scholarly analyses of the material, but it has not been used as a common denominator to interpret and understand Anglo-Saxon sculpture in its own right. In the course of the twentieth century, scholars from different disciplines have developed research questions often strictly related to their own circumstantial agendas or concerns when discussing this kind of material, and this has tended to affect and limit the information that could be gained. It is only recently that some more interdisciplinary approaches have been suggested which provide a fuller understanding of the artistic and cultural achievement conveyed through Anglo-Saxon sculpture. 6.1 The scholarship 6.1 a) Typology and Style1 Any discussion of Anglo-Saxon sculpture opens with an account of the work of W.G. A History of Armenian Immigration to Southern California Daniel Fittante Abstract: Despite its many contributions to Los Angeles, the internally complex community of Armenian Angelenos remains enigmatically absent from academic print. As a result, its history remains untold. While Armenians live throughout Southern California, the greatest concentration exists in Glendale, where Armenians make up a demographic majority (approximately 40 percent of the population) and have done much to reconfigure this homogenous, sleepy, sundown town of the 1950s into an ethnically diverse and economically booming urban center. This article presents a brief history of Armenian immigration to Southern California and attempts to explain why Glendale has become the world’s most demographically concentrated Armenian diasporic hub. It does so by situating the history of Glendale’s Armenian community in a complex matrix of international, national, and local events. Keywords: California history, Glendale, Armenian diaspora, immigration, U.S. ethnic history Introduction Los Angeles contains the most visible Armenian diaspora worldwide; however yet it has received virtually no scholarly attention. The following pages begin to shed light on this community by providing a prefatory account of Armenians’ historical immigration to and settlement of Southern California. The following begins with a short history of Armenian migration to the United States. The article then hones in on Los Angeles, where the densest concentration of Armenians in the United States resides; within the greater Los Angeles area, Armenians make up an ethnic majority in Glendale. To date, the reasons for Armenians’ sudden and accelerated settlement of Glendale remains unclear. While many Angelenos and Armenian diasporans recognize Glendale as the epicenter of Armenian American habitation, no one has yet clarified why or how this came about. -

THE KITZINGER YEARS AT DUMBARTON OAKS In his masterful obituary notice of Ernst Kitzinger written for publication in Dumbarton Oaks Papers 57 (2003), Henry Maguire wrote as follows: "More than any other person, he [Ernst Kitzinger] was responsible for creating at Dumbarton Oaks the world's foremost institution for the study of Byzantium." I want to take the opportunity of this colloquium in his memory to investigate somewhat further exactly what Kitzinger was able to accomplish during his many years at Dumbarton Oaks, especially during the eleven years that he served so ably as Director of Byzantine Studies. By the time Kitzinger first arrived at Dumbarton Oaks late in 1941, at the age of 28, he was well accustomed to the uncertain life of an émigré from Nazi Germany. Born in Munich in 1912, he was educated at the University of Munich, rapidly completing his doctoral studies in 1934 in one year's time, under pressure from the Nazi threat that Jewish students would no longer be awarded the doctorate. He departed from Germany almost immediately, making his way to London where he found employment of a modest sort in the Department of British and Medieval Antiquities at the British Museum. One result of his labors there was a small book entitled Early Medieval Art in the British Museum; first published in 1940 it attained great acclaim and was republished in subsequent editions and eventually a German translation. When Britain declared war on Germany, Kitzinger was declared an enemy alien, despite his refugee status, interned and evacuated to Australia. He spent nine months in a desert camp, putting his time to good use by studying Russian, until his release in 1941, when he received a 1 most welcome invitation to come to Dumbarton Oaks.
