When most people in North America think of top fashion labels, the first names that probably come to mind are something along the lines of Valentino, Chanel and Prada.

But millions of people on the other side of the Atlantic think of Manish Malhotra, Sabyasachi and Masaba. These are just some of the top Indian designers whose extravagant, fabulous outfits are sought after by South Asians around the world. 3 These fashion mavens dress some of the top Bollywood celebrities such as Aishwariya Rai, Priyanka Chopra and Sonam Kapoor, in everything from traditional sarees to eccentrically patterned dresses.

Bollywood’s rich and famous always look beautiful, and these designers are a big reason why.

Manish Malhotra: Malhotra is one of India’s best loved fashion designer. Not only does he make costumes for Bollywood’s leading ladies and men but he also designs for Hollywood stars such as Reese Witherspoon and supermodels Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. Manish is known largely for creating extravagant, traditional Indian clothing with bold colours.

Sabyasachi Mukerjee: Another beloved Indian designer, Sabyasachi is known for his dramatic outfits, which are largely inspired by his hometown, Kolkata, India. His creations generally use dark, earthy colours, but he doesn’t shy away from adding a pop of colour or modern twists to his gorgeous creations once in a while.

Masaba Gupta: Masaba Gupta is the daughter of famous Indian actress, Neena Gupta. Not only is she one of India’s top designers, but also the country's youngest, at 25 years old. Gupta's a favourite with Bollywood’s younger crowd for her modern twists on traditional Indian clothing. She’s also known for incorporating Hindi and Tamil scripts into her designs.

Clothing in India

India is a land of deep traditions and it should come as no surprise that clothing plays a heavy hand in their traditions. Indian clothing has a great diversity in terms of weaves, fibers, and material of clothing, but what is most worthy to note is the variety in color and styles.

From the deep orange marigold flowers that bejewel almost every celebration to the deep hues of red that deck up the bride on her most important day, color in India has, over time, become synonymous with religion – an expression of faith and beliefs. In a country where a deep understanding of the prevalent diversity is perhaps the only common thread that ties its people together, India is a magical experience that ought not to be missed.

4 India has always been exalted and remembered fondly as the country of symbolic colors. Black, for example, has connotations with lack of desirability, evil, negativity, and inertia. It represents anger and darkness and is associated with the absence of energy, barrenness, and death. Black is used as a representation of evil and is often used to ward off evil. White is the absence of color, and is the only color widows are allowed to wear. It is the acceptable color at funerals and ceremonies that mark death in the family. It reflects the basic quality of the color itself, in principle; white, as a color, repels all light and colors and therefore, when a widow wears white, she disconnects herself from the pleasures and luxuries of active and normal participation in society and life around her. Red is dynamic and constantly breathing fire in the eyes of the beholder. It incites fear and is the color associated with one of the most revered goddesses in Hindu mythology – Durga. Her fiery image is enhanced by her red tongue and almost red eyes. Red also stands for purity and is the preferred color for a bride’s garment. Red has a deep meaning in the Indian psyche.

The magnificent sari is worn by women all over India. It has three parts: a tight blouse or shirt; an ankle-length petticoat; and a long cloth between 5 ½ and 10 yards in length. It is wrapped around the waist and draped over the shoulder, oftentimes revealing a woman’s midriffs. Some saris are made of cotton and some are made of silk. The finest ones glitter with gold or silver and are embroidered with unique designs.

The salwar kameez is the typical clothing for Muslim women in India. Many other women in India where this comfortable garment as well. The kameez is a long, loose-fitting top that is worn over baggy pants called salwar. A long scarf called a dupatta is worn over the shoulder with the outfit. Like all Indian clothing, the salwar kameez comes in many colors and patterns. Some women also opt to wear a ghagri-poulka which is essentially an ankle-length skirt.

In northern and central India, village men often wear dhotis. A dhoti is a piece of white cotton measuring 5 ½ yards. It is wrapped around the waist with either one or both ends drawn up between the legs and tucked into the waistband. There are no buttons, snaps, or zippers. Men sometimes wear long white shirts on top. Loose trousers called lengos are also popular. In cities it is common to see men in shirts and trousers. Some wear western-style (American-like)clothing; however, other Indian men choose to wear the classical Indian suit, characterized by a long tight-fitting jacket with a high collar.

It is common for small children to wear western-style (American-like) until they are teenagers. Boys and girls both dress in shorts and shirts, but girls also wear short dresses or blouses (dress shirts).

India is a country with an ancient clothing design tradition, yet an emerging fashion industry. This was the result of increasing exposure to global fashion and the economic boom after the economic liberalization of the Indian economy in 1990. The following decades firmly established fashion as the industry, across India, and we are sure to see great things come from this country.
