The Lady, or the Tiger?

1.Plot: When a princess falls in love with a young man from a lower social class, he must choose his fate in the arena behind one of two doors.

Climax: when he opens the door

2. Characters: King--antagonist (flat), princess—protagonist (does she change?), lover (flat)

3. Setting: Middle Ages, king’s arena

4. Conflict: Man vs. self—the princess must decide if she’s going to let her lover live or not by telling him which door to choose. Man vs Society —man must choose his fate in the arena

5. Theme: (1) Love and jealousy are strong motivators. (2) Not all decisions are fair.

6. Suspense: What will happen to the lover?

7. Mood: slightly uncivilized, ambiguous

8. Foreshadowing: King and princess are semibarbaric, princess is jealous

9. Symbolism: Arena = warped sense of justice, tiger = guilt, lady behind the door = innocence or mercy

10. P.O.V: 3rd person omniscient
