The Christch~rch Writers' Trail I The Christchurch c 3 mitersy&ai1 Page 1 Introduction 2 Writers Biographies Lady Barker e Canterbury Settlement, right from 1850, was notable for its exalted ideals. The @settlement's early colonists lugged ashore libraries, musical instruments, paints, Samuel Butler William Pember Reeves easels and plans for a grammar school and university. Within the first decade they Edith Grossmann started a newspaper, founded choral and orchestral societies, staged plays and Jessie Mackay started a public library. A surprising number of these pioneers were competent Arnold Wall writers. The published memoirs, letters, journals and poetry left by Charlotte Godley, Blanche Bau han Edward and Crosbie Ward, James FitzGerald, Henry Sewell, Sarah Courage, Laurence Johannes An 8ersen Kennaway, Lady Barker, Samuel Butler and other "pilgrims" established a robust Mary Ursula Bethell literary tradition in Canterbury, particularly in non-fiction and poetry. From the Alan Mulgan 1930s to the early 1950s, during Denis Glover's association with The Caxton Press, Esther Glen Oliver Duff Christchurch was indisputably the focal point of New Zealand's artistic life. The N~aioMarsh town's cultural and literary importance - about 280 writers are listed in this booklet D Arcy Cresswell in a record which is by no means definitive - continues to this day. Monte Holcroft James Courage The Canterbury Branch of the New Zealand Society of Authors has, with generous Allen Curnow assistance from The Community Trust, now laid 32 writers' plaques in various parts Essie Summers of Christchurch. The Robert Burns Fellowship 2020
THE ROBERT BURNS FELLOWSHIP 2020 The Fellowship was established in 1958 by a group of citizens, who wished to remain anonymous, to commemorate the bicentenary of the birth of Robert Burns and to perpetuate appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the early settlement of Otago by the Burns family. The general purpose of the Fellowship is to encourage and promote imaginative New Zealand literature and to associate writers thereof with the University. It is attached to the Department of English and Linguistics of the University. CONDITIONS OF AWARD 1. The Fellowship shall be open to writers of imaginative literature, including poetry, drama, fiction, autobiography, biography, essays or literary criticism, who are normally resident in New Zealand or who, for the time being, are residing overseas and who in the opinion of the Selection Committee have established by published work or otherwise that they are a serious writer likely to continue writing and to benefit from the Fellowship. 2. Applicants for the Fellowship need not possess a university degree or diploma or any other educational or professional qualification nor belong to any association or organisation of writers. As between candidates of comparable merit, preference shall be given to applicants under forty years of age at the time of selection. The Fellowship shall not normally be awarded to a person who is a full time teacher at any University. 3. Normally one Fellowship shall be awarded annually and normally for a term of one year, but may be awarded for a shorter period. The Fellowship may be extended for a further term of up to one year, provided that no Fellow shall hold the Fellowship for more than two years continuously. -

Dr. Astrid Fellner [i] ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS “‘[New Zealand] is not quite the moon, but after the moon it is the farthest place in the world,’” said Sir Karl Popper (as quoted in KING 2003: 415), Austrian-New Zea- land-British philosopher; and ‘off the edge of the world’ in unlikely Kawakawa is where Friedensreich Hundertwasser built a colourful public toilet after having abandoned Austria for the sheep-crowded archipelago in the South Pacific. Little did I know about New Zealand as a country, as a people, as a nation and – above all – about how to pen a doctoral dissertation when I set out on this scien- tific journey a little while ago. At a very early stage of my doctoral endeavours, I knew my inquisitiveness could not be satisfied with the holdings at the University of Vienna, Austria, a country on the opposite side of the earth of the country’s lit- erature that I had chosen as subject of investigation. I was lucky enough to call Aotearoa/New Zealand my home for six months in 2009 – a sojourn that proved most fecund to my work, provided me with an abundance of motivation, and left me awe-inspired by the country’s inhabitants – scholars, fishermen, tattooists – its natural beauty and its rich and colourful culture. I was able to spend most of my time in the immense libraries of New Zealand’s universities and in conversation with scholars and authors who so very openly supported my work and provided answers where clarity had yet been missing. -

157 Frank Sargeson [Norris Frank Davey], 1903 – 1982 Lawrence Jones ‘It is not often a writer can be said to have become a symbol in his own lifetime. It is this quality of your achievement that has prompted us to remember this present occasion’. So Frank Sargeson’s fellow New Zealand fiction-writers ended ‘A Letter to Frank Sargeson’, published in Landfall in March 1953 to mark his fiftieth birthday. They were affirming his status as the most significant writer of prose fiction to emerge from that generation that began in the 1930s to create a modern New Zealand Literature. They were celebrating him first as the creator of the New Zealand critical realist short story and short novel, the writer who provided the literary model with which most of those signing the letter had started. But they were also celebrating him as a symbol and a model not only for what he wrote but for where and how he wrote it. In the editorial ‘Notes’ to that same issue of Landfall Charles Brasch stated of Sargeson that ‘by his courage and his gifts he showed that it was possible to be a writer and contrive to live, somehow, in New Zealand, and all later writers are in his debt’. Not only did he show by his example that it was possible to be a serious New Zealand writer without becoming an expatriate, but as mentor and encourager he fostered the careers of a whole generation of fiction writers. At least two of those who signed the letter (Janet Frame and Maurice Duggan) had even lived or were to live in the army hut behind his cottage for a time when they needed the place of refuge and the encouragement, Duggan in 1950 and again in 1958, Frame in 1955-1956. -
