Brewdog Beer Created at a Stag Party to Go on Sale Nationally

News brewed on 24 // 08 // 11 BrewDog beer created at a stag party to go on sale nationally. Alice Porter, a beer devised by bar manager Matt Gorecki during his stag party and named after his fiancée, is now available at Tesco

BrewDog, Scotland’s largest independent brewery, has today announced that its Alice Porter beer, developed with bar manager Matt Gorecki and his friends during their stag party visit to the brewer, will be available nationwide at Tesco supermarkets. The beer, a 6.2% renaissance Baltic porter, is named after Gorecki’s then fiancée (now wife) Alice Porter from Leeds, West Yorkshire.

James Watt, co-founder at BrewDog commented: “ We’re pretty sure this is the first beer ever brewed at a craft beer stag party. Given Alice’s surname, it seemed obvious to our master brewers to create a porter style beer, but we combined a 300 year-old recipe with hop varieties from the UK and Japan to make sure the result was something bold and complex.”

“This beer is the opposite of the stale, fizzy yellow lagers often described as ‘wife beater’; this is a beer born from a people-powered craft-beer revolution.”

From stag party to supermarket shelves

The beer was conceived in November 2010, when Gorecki, the manager of North Bar in Leeds and five of his best friends made the trip to Fraserburgh in Aberdeen for his stag party. Under the close tutelage of BrewDog’s master brewers, the group set about developing a beer worthy of the bride-to-be. The original 15HL batch was only sold at North Bar and BrewDog’s own bar in Aberdeen.

Despite having no plans to brew the beer again once it was finished, the public response to the vanilla infused beer with hints of chocolate and cinnamon proved very persuasive and Alice Porter has now become an international phenomenon. As well as being stocked by Tesco, the Baltic renaissance porter has been amongst the most popular on the brewer’s online store at BrewDog.com, with customers placing orders from as far afield as Australia and New Zealand.

For richer for pourer

Earlier this month, BrewDog launched an innovative online share offer, Equity for Punks, which allows fans to buy shares directly in the business – a scheme that has already raised £1.25m towards a new low-carbon brewery. In return for lending her name to the new beer, Alice has been handed her own shares in the BrewDog business, which gives her a lifetime discount on the company’s beers and means she gets richer with every Alice Porter sold.

Matt Gorecki commented: “ Brewing a beer named after your fiancée seemed like a great idea, but it actually proved pretty nerve- racking. The fact it has been so popular is amazing. As far as wedding gifts go, I think having a famous beer named after you is pretty high on the list. Alice certainly seemed pretty pleased.”

Nestled between BrewDog’s other iconic brands Punk IPA, Trashy Blonde and 5AM Saint, Alice Porter will only be sold at £1.79 per 330ml bottle and can also be ordered online at BrewDog.com, where fans can also buy shares in the brewery.

What is BrewDog? We were bored of the industrially brewed lagers and stuffy ales that dominate the UK market. We decided the best way to fix this undesirable predicament was to brew our own beers. Consequently in April 2007 BrewDog was born. Both only 24 at the time, we leased a building, got some scary bank loans, spent all our money on stainless steel and started making some hardcore beers.

We are dedicated to making cool, contemporary and progressive beers showcasing some of the world’s classic beer styles. All with an innovative twist and customary BrewDog bite. James Watt and Martin
