Active Reading: Reading, Reflecting, and Thinking

After you’ve completed your assigned reading, please answer the following questions. Take notes on this paper as you read and/or type your responses after you’ve finished reading. Bring your completed responses to class. You will choose five of these Active Reading assignments to include in your final e-portfolio.

1. Where did you do this reading? (In your room? In the library? etc.) What time of day did you read this assignment? What about the time and place helped or hindered your reading experience? As I am currently reading now, I am reading on the third floor of the UNCC’s Atkins Library. The time of day is midnight, because I am more of a night reader. It is quiet in the Library and I have a huge Apple desktop computer to read off of and this makes it easier and enjoyable.

2. How did you interact with the text? For example, did you take notes in the margins, underline/highlight important phrases, look up words, find topics you wanted to research, etc.? Or did you just read? (Perhaps you might think about what format the text was in. Was it paper or electronic? Do you think that the type of text influences how you read?) I just read it; I am not and probably never will be a note taker during my readings. I read more of electronic but currently I have been noticing that I am just as good a reader with either form of text.

3. What did you learn through reading this particular text? What links did you see between the author’s main contention and yourself as a writer? I learned how it is possible to link Facebook to a Rhetorical Analysis. Of course I already know all the uses of Facebook that it went into detail to explain, I did not realize that some people use Facebook for more than just communication between friends.

4. What questions do you have after reading this text? What aspects of this text do you want and/or need to explore more fully? What other topics does this piece make you wonder about? Well in this text it used Aristotle’s words Ethos, Pathos and more. I have zero idea what these mean so it made the read slightly more difficult even though I got most of it. It also made me wonder if the same concepts could be used for Twitter.

5. What personal experiences can you relate to this text? I can actually relate a lot of experience to this text because I am constantly on Facebook and use the features it discussed.

6. How may we focus class discussion based on this piece? You may find an interesting quote you wish to discuss further. You may also wish to discuss a concept in more depth. Or perhaps you are just flat out confused. Let’s talk about it. A class discussion used to find out if it’s possible to find a rhetorical analysis through Twitter would be interesting. Also it would be nice to go into more depth on Rhetorical Analysis and what it is all about.
