Whitley College is the Baptist Theological college of Victoria and is both a theological school within the MCD University of Divinity and a residential college of the University of Melbourne. Both in its hospitality to students in other disciplines and in theological formation, it serves to equip leaders who will change the world.
Through the theological school Whitley is dedicated to forming Christian disciples in faith, hope and love. Students study theology here for a variety of reasons – preparing for pastoral or other Christian leadership, exploring questions of faith or vocation, integrating their faith and daily life, developing a fresh approach to mission, returning to study while in Christian service and engaging in scholarly theological research. Whitley encourages both residential and theological students to integrate their life and faith, considering where their life experience meets and engages the wider world.
This year, the general theme of the theological school is Hope and Mission, and we are encouraging students to reflect upon how hope is expressed and invited in their living. That is, we invite students to consider seriously the context in which their life and faith unfolds, and how hope may be an expression of their mission in the world. The college rests in a conviction that the Creator God draws all people to their own creative potential, and it is with this in mind that we are inviting students to respond to the annual theme in a fresh and creative way.
The “Chapel on Station Gallery” located on Station St Box Hill, is an art gallery established by the Box Hill Baptist Church. The gallery has sprung from a desire by the church community to encourage emerging artists and community groups interested in exploring art that elevates the soul. It is grounded in a conviction that art affirms a deep spiritual need for expression that when shared draws others to ‘wonder’. The gallery strongly supports the visual medium as a way of exploring and expressing the experience of faith, and is pleased to support Whitley students in their creative expression.
In offering the Art Prize, we hope to encourage artist-students who are grappling with what it means to reflect theologically upon the theme, extending ways of interpreting how hope and mission interact and acknowledging the diversity of ways we experience and understand God expressed in the world. We want to honour the open ways in which we are inspired. Indeed, in the face of the struggles around us, we are wondering how we might outwork faith in a God who offers life and hope to all people.
So, allow yourself to be liberated to explore, to ponder in a different medium what Hope and Mission looks like! Involvement in the process of this prize is intended to enrich the spiritual experience of artists and students, and indeed, to extend an invitation to all who view the exhibition to reflect upon understandings of Hope and Mission.
