A. Japan

A 5 The change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries in the post-WWII period

No. of periods required: 11 (Each period lasts for 40 minutes.)

1. Background a. Students are in S6 and their learning ability is above average in general. b. Students have basic understanding of the problems and difficulties in the early post-WWII period. c. Students have a general picture about the political, social and economic developments in the early post-WWII Japan. d. Students have an understanding of different roles played by different parties in bringing the economic recovery and growth of Japan in the post-WWII period. e. They are familiar with group discussion and presentation. f. They have already got some basic thinking skills like mindmaping, data collection and analysis of data. 2. Objectives a. To provide a general idea about the change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries. b. To develop students’ skills in illustrating personal standpoint with convincing arguments and heighten their skills in data collection, synthesis and analysis. c. To enhance students’ understanding of the importance of respect and acceptance of others’ opinions through cooperative learning. 3. Pedagogies a. Activity 1: Oral Report - An impressive incident/event (2 teaching periods) i. Pre-lesson assignment: Ask students to search ONE impressive incident/event which shows the relation between Japan and any ONE/TWO Asian countries in either political, economic or cultural aspect in the post WWII period. (see Worksheet 1.) ii. Group sharing: Ask students to share Worksheet 1 with group members and then choose the most impressive one for the group

presentation. iii. Group presentation: students need to present the most impressive incident/event to the class. iv. Teacher’s Conclusion. b. Activity 2: Timeline drawing (1 teaching period) i. After getting the knowledge about the political, economic and cultural relations of Japan with other Asian countries in the post WWII period, students are asked to draw a timeline to show the relations in Worksheet 2. ii. Teacher’s Conclusion. c. Activity 3: Follow-up Essay-WritingTask i. Students are asked to write an essay ‘Trace and explain the change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries.’ ii Teachers are advised to guide students to study the assessment criteria and complete the essay based on the criteria so that they have a clear understanding of the level marking of essay writing. (See Worksheet 3.) 4. Expected outcome/difficulties a. Students will have a general idea about the change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries. b. Students will master skills of data collection, analysis, synthesis and illustrating personal standpoint with convincing arguments. c. Students will have deeper understanding of the importance of respect and acceptance of others’ opinions through cooperative learning.

Guidelines for reference: . Focus of timeline: important events to show political, economic and cultural relations of Japan with other Asian countries in the post WWII period . Important events should include 3 periods, i.e. early hostile relations in the period from 1940s to 1960s, improving relations in the 1970s and 1980s and good relation with occasional tension in the 1990s . Each period should be provided with evidence

Criteria Grade (Max. 15) -Coherent presentation with balanced treatment of “tracing” and A 14-15 “explaining” the change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries in the post-WWII period. Able to periodise when tracing, and to provide corresponding explanation for each sub-period. The answer is supported by solid historical examples that cover considerably the period. -Shows good understanding of the question, able to provide a B 12-13 generally balanced treatment of “tracing” and “explaining” the change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries in the post-WWII period. Able to periodise when tracing, and to to provide corresponding explanation for each sub-period. Historical examples cover a considerable part of the period in question; possibly marred by minor lopsidedness. -Shows good understanding of the question, able to provide a C 10-11 generally balanced treatment of “tracing” and “explaining” the change and continuity in Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries in the post-WWII period, but obviously weak in periodising when tracing and examining the policies. Historical examples cover a good part of the period in question; possibly marred by minor lopsidedness.

-Shows general understanding of the question, and the answer D 8-9 focuses merely on either tracing or explaining the development of Japan’s political, economic and cultural relations with other Asian countries in the post-WWII period; or attempts to tackle both but marred by very rough points. - Attempts to deal with the concepts of “change and continuity”, but marred by lopsidedness, rough arguments and/or vagueness in discussion.

- Shows awareness of the question, but discussion is marred by E 6-7 overgeneralization withut effective use of historical examples. - Lopsided to either tracing or explaining the development of Japan’s political, economic and cultural relatins with other Asian coutntries in the post-WWII period, with obvious factural errors. - With no obvious attempt to deal with the concepts of “change and continuity” - Primarily a narration of the development of Japan’s political, E/F 5 economic and cultural relatins with other Asian coutntries in the post-WWII period, without obvious attempt to trace and explain the policies. - A narration of the development of Japan’s political, economic F 3-4 and cultural relatins with other Asian coutntries in the post- WWII period, and/or shows no efforts of tracing (i.le. how the relations evolved) and explaining the development. - With no attempt to deal with the concepts of “change and continuity”. - Containing few relevant and important facts; poorly organized and barely understandable, with conspicuous mistakes in writing or spellingt personal and place names.
