Name: Stacey Cobb

Grade Level/Subject: First grade math

Topic: Identify and graph congruent shapes.

Objectives (P.A.S.S.): Standard 2:2a Compare and order objects by size and quantity.

Standard 4:1a Sort and identify congruent shapes.

Standard 5:1 Organize data and display using a grid and numbers.

Instruction

1. Introduction: Be shape detectives. Play “I Spy” using shapes, ex.” I spy a circle” the class will then look around the room to find circular objects. Continue with squares and triangles.

2. Instructional process: Daily assignments have been ongoing using the Graph Club 2.0. The class learned to graph using pet, travel to school, favorite sport, and favorite food symbols and the blank graph taken from the Graph Club. Daily discussions about shapes have occurred all week. Graph Club 2.0 made useful displays. Review shape rules that have been covered all week. Circles have no sides or angles. They have the same diameter all the way around which makes them different than ovals. Squares have 4 sides of equal size and 4 angles. Triangles have 3 sides and 3 angles. Review graphing rules. Identify congruent objects, count them, and display the data on the graph starting at the bottom.

3. Closure: Create a graph together using the overhead projector in the absence of a Smart Board. Use transparent shape tiles to organize and display data. Chart the graph using Graph Club 2.0 on the Dell laptop.

Materials: shape tiles, overhead projector, graph transparency, Dell laptop, worksheet.

Technology: Overhead projector, Dell laptop with Graph Club 2.0, Microsoft Word.

Assessment: Hand out the worksheet created in Microsoft Word. Students will independently identify and color all circles red, all squares blue, and all triangles green. Record how many of each shape are found below the graph and color the graph to match.

Modifications/Accommodations: Stand near students needing more instruction to be available to help them follow along and keep them progressing. Read the test aloud.

Reflection: I think the Graph Club was helpful in the lesson. The students responded with enthusiasm. This lesson went as planned. Post test scores increased dramatically.
