Lesson Plan Unit topic: Science Theme: The Brain
Lesson Objectives:
When the lesson is completed the students will be able to locate the 4 lobes of the brain, including the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe, the parietal lobe, and the occipital lobe.
They will also know and understand the function of each lobe. The students will also be able to describe and locate the brain stem, pituitary glands, the hypothalamus, and the cerebellum.
Instructional Techniques:
-Group work- Students will be given 2 worksheets that they will work on in groups.
-Discussion- Students will be able to discuss what they already know about the brain when working on worksheets in their groups.
-Lecture- The teacher will give a lecture about the 9 parts of the brain and there functions.
Instructional Material:
Students will be given two worksheets at the beginning of the lesson, that they will fill out with as much information that they think they know about the brain. There is also one worksheet that they will have for homework to complete. After the worksheets and lecture from the teacher there is a game on the computer that the students will be able to use. The game involves traveling through the brain of Timothy.
Theoretical Perspective:
The brain is a very important part of the body; it controls everything from your personality to seeing, speaking, and hearing. Therefore it is a necessary topic of study for students to be taught. When students know about how their bodies function they will be able to live a healthier and happier life.
ISTE Standards:
1. Apply strategies for identifying and solving routine hardware and software
problems that occur during everyday use.
~ The students are engaging with computers and if any problems arise they must
be able to solve the problem accordingly. As well, they must be able to
manipulate the website they are using and be able to handle any mishaps that may
arise from it.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of current changes in information technology and the
effect those changes have on the work place and society.
~The students are using the internet and are showing that they know how to
manipulate the website.
5. Apply productivity/multimedia tools and peripheral to support personal
productivity group collaboration and learning throughout the curriculum.
~Using the website to essentially guide, test and reinforce the lesson that is being
taught. The website evaluates the students’ progress and allows the teacher to
asses the student’s abilities.
8. Select and use appropriate tools and technology resources to accomplish a
variety of task and solve problems.
~ The students are using the website to reinforce and test their learning from
class. They must know enough information about each part of the brain to be able to correctly answer the questions presented to them, to make their way through
the brain.
9. Demonstrate and understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software
and connectivity and of practical applications to learning and problem
solving.
~They are using the computer and internet as an examination of their ability to
complete the objectives outlined in this lesson plan. They must demonstrate to
the teacher they have an understanding of the locations and functions of each part
of the brain.
Procedure:
A. Have the students write in their journals everything that they think their brain
does/controls in their body.
B. 1. First we will give the students a word search, with words that will be used
in this lesson, for them to complete individually.
2. After the word search is completed the teacher will give a lecture about all
the parts of the brain. He/she will explain each part that is used in the lesson
and explain the function of each.
3. Next the teacher will divide students into groups in order to work on the
next assignment.
4. The teacher will hand out the two worksheets that the students are to
complete in their groups. The worksheets have a picture of the brain and the
students are to label them correctly and then write down what the function is
for each part. 5. That will conclude day one of this lesson, but for homework the students
are given a crossword puzzle to keep them on track, for them to complete for
the next day.
6. At the beginning of the next class the teacher will go over the answers to
the crossword puzzle that they had for homework.
7. Next the teacher will introduce the website, explaining to the students what
they need to know and what will be expected of them.
8. The students will have the rest of the class time to complete the game on
the website.
9. At the end of the class the teacher will remind students to study for the
exam that will be given next class.
10. The next class will consist of the test on “The Brian” unit.
11. After the test the teacher will ask students to tell him/her what they liked
and disliked about the lesson/website.
C. Closure- The teacher will examine the exam scores and look over what the
students did well on and what needed improvement. He/she will then go over
the lesson to see what could be changed for next year in order to see
improvement in the exam scores. To wrap up the unit students will be asked
make a model of the brain out of some kind of material, showing each part
and then will be asked to present this to the class.
D. The adaptations for different learners in this lesson would involve the
student’s ability or inability to manipulate the internet and/or computer.
Students with slower ability to do so, should be guided by the teacher and be shown how to correctly manipulate the website. Many students should have
little problems with the unit. Students need to be reminded that they need to
look over the brain worksheets and understand the functions of each.
E. The homework after the first day of the lesson is to complete the crossword
for class the next day, as well as look over the two work sheets they
completed in class that day. For the second day students are to review all the
worksheets for the exam on the following day of class.
Evaluation:
A. Students will be evaluated through the exam given at the end of the unit, as
well as the project. The teacher will be able to tell if the student really
understands the concepts presented in the lesson by watching them present their
brain to the class. The Brain
