POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Position: Nine-month tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a preferred expertise in clinical or translational research in one or more of the following areas: infant, child or adolescent nutrition, behavioral or environmental interventions, prevention and reduction of chronic diseases, exercise, aging or cognition. Date effective: August 1, 2017 Qualifications: Earned doctorate in nutrition or closely related field; post-doctoral experience and RD credential desirable; evidence of the ability or potential to develop an independent, externally- funded research program; ability or potential to teach and mentor graduate and undergraduate students effectively; possession of excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability or willingness to collaborate and work with others in a collegial team atmosphere; active memberships in appropriate professional organizations. Major responsibilities: (1) Establish an independent, externally- funded research program to study the impact of dietary factors or physical activity on: infant, child or adolescent health, health disparities, chronic diseases, cognitive function, aging; (2) Participate in undergraduate and graduate teaching curricula; (3) Train and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and; (4) Participate in professional and departmental, school, and university service. General information on the Department of Nutrition at UNC-Greensboro:

 Ten tenured/tenure-track Faculty lines, three Academic Professional lines and two Lecturers.  Three undergraduate concentrations – Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Nutrition Science, and Nutrition and Wellness (approximately 320 undergraduate majors).

 Three graduate programs – M.S. (thesis and non-thesis); Ph.D. (~43 graduate students).

 Two ACEND-accredited dietetics programs: a Didactic Program in Dietetics and a post- baccalaureate Dietetic Internship Program.

 Faculty research programs that address diverse problems in nutrition and include the following: (1) nutrition education, food insecurity issues, parenting/family and nutrition practices; (2) the transport metabolism, and function of nutrients and phytochemicals; (3) impact of nutrition on physical performance; (4) women’s health and lactation including human milk processing and distribution; (5) bone health; (6) regulation of adipocyte growth and development; and micronutrient deficiencies.

 Contemporary human nutrition research facilities including personal interview and focus group rooms, food preparation and demonstration lab, and computer laboratory with access to the Minnesota Nutrition Data System Software. Adjoining these facilities is the Human Nutrition Laboratory which is equipped with BOD POD and DEXA, a room for drawing human blood samples, and a room/equipment for measuring physical fitness levels. The department also has contemporary animal facilities and well-equipped laboratories for conducting cellular and molecular research.

 The nutrition department also has access to the laboratory facilities of the UNCG Center for Translational Biomedical Research at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis.

 Location in the School of Health and Human Sciences (HHS), which has seven other academic departments (Communication Sciences and Disorders, Community and Therapeutic Recreation, Human Development and Family Studies, Kinesiology, Public Health Education, and Social Work, Peace and Conflict Studies) and two interdisciplinary programs in Genetic Counseling, and Gerontology. The School also houses UNCG Middle College, which opened its doors in 2011 to high school students interested in exploring health sciences. The diversity of the faculty and students of HHS is 20% and 30%, respectively, from non-white ethnic groups, well above the national average in both categories.

 Collaborative research opportunities with local health care facilities through Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Duke University, UNC-Chapel Hill School of Medicine, College of Agriculture at North Carolina State University, and North Carolina A&T State University.
