Perform a search and click on the Artists tab. Select the artist of your choice to display their page and their discography. 12. What can I do if I can't find a song? Do not include too many details in the search string for e.g version of song, featuring, remix etc. Try searching by the album title or the singer/group name 13. How do I create a playlist? Go to My Music, then in the left-hand menu at the bottom click on the + button (New Playlist). Enter a name, click Enter on your keyboard and that’s it! Your playlist has been created! 14. Can I add my personal MP3s to my playlists? Yes. Go to My MP3s section and use Drag & Drop to import your personal songs. Then, add your personal tracks to your playlists like a Deezer song. Personal MP3s added to your playlist will only be accessible to you and NOT to other Deezer users who listen to your playlist. 15. What happens when I cancel my internet connection? Your Deezer account will be automatically downgraded to Deezer Discovery, which allows you to listen to the first 30 seconds of tracks only. However, you will keep your playlists and your personal information (including Facebook). 16. What is the SmartRadio? The SmartRadio is a radio channel which automatically generates songs from the selected artist and similar artists 17. How do I listen to a Radio Channel? To listen to a Radio Channel, go to the Radio Channels section at the top of the page. Choose the genre of music and click on the artist's avatar that you want to listen to. That's it. Your Radio Channel has been launched! You can also search for a Radio Channel in the search box by putting in a keyword (Theme, Artist, Musical Genre, etc.) to launch the Radio Channel. 18. Can I make my own SmartRadio? No, the SmartRadio is a program which chooses music tracks according to your taste. If you want to make your own selection, you can make playlists! 19. Can I skip through the selected tracks? Listening to a Radio Channel is not the same as listening to music on demand; you are limited to changing the track 5 times in an hour. For more interaction, it’s possible to return to listening to music on demand on Deezer; either by creating playlists, by listening to playlists edited by Deezer or other Deezer users. 20. How do I delete a track from the current SmartRadio? When launching an artist-based radio channel, click on Never again in the player, and the SmartRadio you launched will not play this track again. 21. Can I use Deezer on my tablet? Deezer is compatible with Apple tablets and Android tablets but you wouldn’t be able to this function for the moment with your Deezer premium music service. 22. Can I use Deezer on my HiFi IP device? Yes, Deezer is compatible with SONOS HiFi IP devices and Logitech IP devices. 23. How do you see the messages that have been written on my wall? Go to your profile page and click on Community. You can then see, reply to or delete messages on your wall. 24. How can you find a friend who is already on Deezer? Go to your profile page and click on "Community". At the bottom right, type in the friend's email address or Deezer username in the box that says "Search for a member". In the search results, if you find the person you are looking for, you can then see their profile and add them as a friend by clicking on "Add as friend". This person will be put into "invitations pending" until they accept your invitation. They will then be visible in the section listed as "My Friends". 25. What are the Invitations pending and Invitations sections? The section Invitations Pending is a list of people that you have invited to be your friend but who haven’t accepted your request yet. On the other hand, the Invitations section is a list of people who have asked you to be their friend. You can choose to accept or refuse to be connected as friends. 26. How do I delete someone from my list of friends? Go to your profile page and then to Community. At the bottom right in the section Search for a member, enter their Deezer username or their email address. In the search results, if you find the person you are looking for, you can click on Delete this friend. You can also do this by going to the Deezer user's page and clicking delete under their avatar. 27. How do I access my received messages? Once you have logged in to your account, click on your username at the top right of the site and go to Messages. You can also click on the envelope which is found on the livebar at the bottom of the site. 28. I am an artist and I am interested to get my music on Deezer. What shall I do?     DIMONT (MEDRANO_10) (DO NOT DELETE) 2/10/2018 10:11 AM Royalty Inequity: Why Music Streaming Services Should Switch to a Per-Subscriber Model JOSEPH DIMONT* Digital music streaming services, like Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal, currently distribute royalties based on a per-stream model, known as service-centric licensing, while at the same time receive income through subscription fees and advertising revenue. This results in a cross-subsidization between low streaming users and high streaming users, streaming fraud, and a fundamental inequity between the number of subscribers an artist may attract to a service compared to how much they are compensated. Instead, streaming services should distribute royalties by taking each user’s subscription fee and dividing it pro rata based on what the specific user is listening toknown as a subscriber-share modelor user-centric licensing. Many scholars have focused on creating a minimum royalty rate; however, this does little to solve the inherent inequity. Either the music industry should self-regulate by switching to a subscriber-centric model, or the Copyright Royalty Board should make the switch for them. Under a subscriber-centric model, royalty distribution would more accurately reward artists for generating fans, not streams. Each month, the streaming service should take each subscription fee and apportion it out based on the percentages of artists that unique listeners choose to listen to during the subscription period. This change could come through the industry itself, litigation, or regulation, but will likely face resistance from the major record labels and the services themselves. * J.D. Jennie Silber Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA, USA Media & Communication Department Undergraduate High Honors Thesis April 1, 2019 1 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS 2 MUSIC RECOMMENDATION ALGORITHMS Abstract This thesis analyzes and assesses the cultural impact and economic viability that the top music streaming platforms have on the consumption and discovery of music, with a specific focus on recommendation algorithms. Through the support of scholarly and journalistic research as well as my own user experience, I evaluate the known constructs that fuel algorithmic recommendations, but also make educated inferences about the variables concealed from public knowledge. One of the most significant variables delineated throughout this thesis is the power held by human curators and the way they interact with algorithms to frame and legitimize content. Additionally, I execute my own experiment by creating new user profiles on the two streaming platforms popularly used for the purpose of discovery, Spotify and SoundCloud, and record each step of the music discovery process experienced by a new user. After listening to an equal representation of all genre categories within each platform, I then compare the genre, release year, artist status, and content promotion gathered from my listening history to the algorithmically-generated songs listed in my ‘Discover Weekly’ and ‘SoundCloud Weekly’ personalized playlists. The results from this experiment demonstrate that the recommendation algorithms that power these discovery playlists intrinsically facilitate the perpetuation of a star- driven, “winner-take-all” marketplace, where new, popular, trendy, music is favored, despite how diverse of a selection the music being listened to is.
