Green Engineering Program Committee GEPC DRAFT 1. Name of Technical/Program Committee: Green Engineering Program Committee

2. Officers:

GEPC currently has a leadership team comprised of a Chair, Past-Chair, and Vice-Chair (future chair). Jason and Valerie have been leading the GEPC since 2009 as co-chairs. In January 2013 Valerie Lyons relinquished her role as Co-Chair but remained part of the committee. In August 2013, Jason Slagle notified the committee that he would be stepping down as Chair and that Marty Bradley would be taking over the running of the committee at SciTech2014.

Marty Bradley plans on serving as Chair until May 2016 (approximately 2.5 years). Candidate nominations are presently being accepted for the Vice-Chair position. The Vice-Chair will serve a two- year role prior to assuming the Chair position.

Chair : Marty Bradley, Boeing MC: H017-D334 Huntington Beach, CA 714-896-1371 [email protected]

Past-Chair: Jason Slagle, Boeing P.O. Box 3707 MC 0Y-EK Seattle, WA 98124-2207 425-299-4532 [email protected]

3. Membership:

As of January 14, 2014, the total membership of the committee is 49, which includes 4 Associate, 11 International, and 0 Alumni.

 International members are from Canada, Japan, United Kingdom, Egypt, South Africa, Israel, and Thailand.

 43% of the members are from Industry, 41% from Academia, and 16% from Government.

 57% of the member expressed primary interest in Green Aviation, and 43% Green Energy.

Two GEPC Members were upgraded to Fellow status (Rich Wahls, John Blanton) and one member was upgraded to Associate Fellow status (Ruben Del Rosario).

In 2014 we will add new members and also “prune” the membership list to eliminate inactive members of the PC. However, no member will be removed due to lack of attendance at face-to-face meetings if they participate in telecons or subcommittee activities.

5. Meetings and Conferences Activities:

GEPC holds face-to-face meetings at the SciTech and P&E conferences. In 2013, we also held a PC telecon in November 2013.

In 2014, we plan for all face-to-face conference meetings to also be telecons to allow all members to participate even if travel restrictions limit their ability to travel. The committee also will meet virtually just before or after the Aviation conference. Additional telecons will be held in February, June, and September. For 2014, we added separate Leadership Team and Conference Subcommittee meetings at conferences to improve planning and coordination. Additionally, we will hold Leadership Team telecons as needed.

The GEPC organized the following Conference sessions:

The GEPC participated in the Aerospace Sciences Meeting (ASM2013) and the Joint Propulsion Conference (JPC2013) at P&E13. The GEPC has created sessions for the Aerospace Sciences Meeting at SciTech14. Details on the sessions are as follows:

This conference will join with the AIAA P&E conference in 2014 in Cleveland. Valerie Lyons is working with IEEE and AIAA to coordinate this joint event.

Going forward into 2014 beyond SciTech14, the GEPC plans to support Aviation14, and P&E14. The GEPC will do our first “call for papers” for SciTech15.

6. Honors and Awards Activities:

No activity for 2013. For 2014, the subcommittee plans to identify and develop a nomination package for someone working in the area of Green Engineering and provide it to another AIAA TC for use in their award selection process. The subcommittee is also planning to investigate options for doing a “best paper” or “best presentation” award.

7. Publication Activities:

Include a description of any publication activities during the year.

 GEPC submitted an annual report in Jan 2013

8. Public Policy and White Paper Activities:

 No activity in 2013

9. Standards Activities:

 No activity in 2013

10. Education Activities:

 AIAA Aircraft Design Competition RFP for a hybrid electric regional passenger aircraft developed by member Marty Bradley was used in the 2012-2013 Aircraft Design Competition topic. Several GEPC members participated in advising student teams for this and the similar FAA design competition.  At the EnergyTech 2013 Conference, specials sessions for high school students to learn about green energy were held and 60 high school students were invited to attend these sessions and also a half day of the actual conference sessions. They were also given a chance to meet and talk to Case Western Reserve University engineering students about their career plans.  For 2014, we are talking to Gas Turbine TC about jointly sponsoring an engine design competition for a hybrid electric propulsion system.

11. COMMITTEE interactions with AIAA Sections Activities:

 Marty Bradley traveled to the AIAA Antelope Valley Section and made a presentation on “Alternative Energy for Aviation”

4 Green Engineering Program Committee GEPC DRAFT

 Rich Wahls made an invited presentation “Green Aircraft Concepts and Enabling Technology Research at NASA,” 64th AIAA Southeast Region (Region II) Student Conference, Raleigh, NC, April 9, 2013 (oral only) (invited, Awards Banquet – 180 people)  Rich Wahls served the Hampton Roads Section as a Council Member  In 2014, the members of the GEPC will be encouraged to interact with their sections and report back to the PC.

CAAFI – xxx Having conference on Jan 28-29th Washington DC

14. Use of TAC Funds

5 Green Engineering Program Committee GEPC DRAFT In 2013 spending has been limited to meeting dinners at the ASM and JPC conferences. For 2014, GEPC would like to explore group funding for a one-time purchase of committee shirts and/or GEPC business cards.

15. Most significant COMMITTEE achievement(s):

 Organized well attended (some standing room only) special Green Engineering sessions at ASM13, JPC13, and SciTech14.  In 2013, created the RFP for the Aircraft Design TC for Student Design Competition: “Design of a 2030 Regional Airliner Considering Hybrid Electric Propulsion”, and in 2013 members advised student teams.  Conducted our first separate Leadership Team and Conference Subcommittee planning meetings at SciTech.  Established liaisons with over 25 committees and organizations

16. Best practices/Lessons learned

 To foster an active membership, telecons are needed in between face-to-face meetings. Especially in the current era of travel restrictions, methods to allow virtual participation are important.

17. Other items to note:

2013 was the Green Engineering Program Committee’s fourth year in existence, and we continue to exhibit positive performance, generating interest among the AIAA members. Our work on Conference Sessions is especially effective. GEPC aims to put AIAA at the forefront of this burgeoning area. In 2014, we have plans in place and in development that will increase our reach and positive influence.
