5 Spools are called bobbins in some woollen spinning plants. Spools contain the slubbing produced from the card.

6 Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing work activities and include health and safety, operational, environmental, and quality management requirements. They may refer to manuals, manufacturer's specifications, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Demonstrate knowledge of woollen spinning and the woollen spinning machine.

Performance criteria

1.1 Woollen spinning is explained in terms of purpose and yarn characteristics.

1.2 Sections of a woollen spinning frame are identified and described in terms of their function.

Range creel, drafting zone, false twist, spindles, ring and traveller, waste collection, headstock, machine controls, spindle tape, spindle brake, lappet, oiling device, waste recycling.

1.3 Spinning faults are identified and described in terms of significance and corrective action.

Range contamination, double ends, thick and thin yarn, twist variation, piecening faults, package shape, package density, oil and grease marks, excessive end breaks, traveller wear, light and heavy ends.

Element 2

Comply with company and statutory health, safety, and environment requirements.

2.1 Company-supplied clothing, and hygiene and safety equipment and materials, are worn and used according to workplace procedures and statutory requirements.

2.2 Work methods comply with workplace procedures and statutory requirements to minimise the risk of ill-health and injuries to self and others.

2.3 Unsafe and unhealthy conditions are identified and reported according to company and statutory requirements.

Element 3

Prepare and operate a woollen spinning machine.

3.1 Machine is prepared and operated in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.2 Machine is prepared for operation in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range batch identification, creel loaded, travellers fitted, thread up and run on, empty tubes in place.

3.3 Yarn is spun in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range piece up end breaks, pull back ends on spool, thread drafting zone, doff full yarn packages, change spool sets, maintain ring oil, adjust spool tension, fake twist RPM.

3.4 Product is handled and recorded in accordance with workplace procedures.

Element 4

Identify and fix operational and product faults.

4.1 Yarn faults are identified and rectified in accordance with workplace procedures.

Range contamination, double ends, thick and thin yarn, twist variation, piecening faults, package shape, package density, oil and grease marks, excessive end breaks, wear, piecening faults, light/heavy ends.

4.2 Spinning machine malfunction is identified and rectified in accordance with workplace procedures.

Element 5

Keep spinning machine and work area clean.

5.1 Work area is kept clean and all waste material is collected and sorted in accordance with workplace procedures to prevent contamination.

5.2 Spinning machine components are kept free of unwanted fibre during processing in accordance with workplace procedures.

5.3 Spinning machine is cleaned at end of a batch in accordance with workplace procedures.

5.4 Spinning tubes are clean, undamaged, and free of waste yarn.

5.5 Cleanliness of equipment and work area complies with workplace procedures.
